The US Census underway will provide greater insight into growth and changing demographics in the Triangle region.  The whole nation is becoming increasingly diverse, as is NC.  Will the Raleigh-Cary metro region still be the fastest growing?  Census data will help us plan solutions for planning, like public transit options and stronger protections for water, housing options and funding for schools.  Click here to learn more about 'The Demographic Re-Mix of the 21st Century'.

Here's what's happening on growth issues right now -- we invite you to join WakeUP in these efforts!

New threat to the Falls Lake Watershed
WakeUP is monitoring a proposal allowing a large commercial development in the Falls Lake watershed.  Proposed development planning language would permit "non-conforming uses" to expand commercial development on site.  The Wake Board of Commissioners will vote on this April 5th.  Raleigh City Council unanimously opposed this proposal March 16th.
  Contact Wake County Commissioners here.

New Code comments due March 31st
Progress on Raleigh's New Development Code is moving forward swiftly.  The City needs your feedback on the New Code "Diagnostic and Approach Report" by Wednesday, March 31st.  Click here for the report and to comment online.  Overall, WakeUP believes the report recommendations would move the city towards good growth planning.

Dear Friend,
Despite scathing comments from the public and significant attention by the media, the Wake County Board of County Commissioners (BoCC) is considering approving a Text Change to the UDO that would put at risk the future of Falls Lake and every other water supply with a connection to Wake County. We need  your help; please contact the Wake County Board of County Commissioners and tell them that the proposed text change, OA 03-09, serves only private interests, is dangerous to the future health of Wake County, and should be denied.

The Proposed OA 03-09, brought forth by private property interests, was heard by the Wake Commissioners at the beginning of this month and was opposed by the Foundation, WakeUp Wake County, the City of Raleigh, and the Watershed Protection Council.  This is an attempt to permanently grandfather non-conforming uses in Water Supply Watersheds (including Falls Lake, Swift Creek, and Little River) to allow large development projects to be created where a residential-only restriction currently exists.  The specific property interests bringing this change forward is a lumber yard with plants to be converted into a large shopping center near Hwy 50 and 98 in northwest Wake County, a property within the Falls Lake Watershed.
On Monday, March 29, the Growth, Land Use and Environment (GLUE) Committee of the Wake BoCC will meet at 10:15 a.m. to discuss this proposed text change.  In addition, the subject is expected to be addressed for a final decision at the 1:00 p.m. BoCC meeting on April 5, 2010.  Before those dates the Commissioners must hear from the community about the dangers this text change presents.

Act Now!
Contact the Wake County Board of County Commissioners and tell them that the proposed text change, OA 03-09, serves only private interests, is dangerous to the future health of Wake County, and should be denied.  This change does not the benefit Falls Lake or Wake County residents in general, is not necessary for the project being discussed to occur, and risks opening the flood gates to a hoard of environmentally damaging projects that will no longer be required to receive appropriate evaluation by the public.
You can contact them via: Email or Phone at (919) 856-6160
Please include all of the Wake Commissioners at commissioners@co.wake.nc.us and Susan Banks, Clerk to the BoCC at susan.banks@co.wake.nc.us. If you are willing, we would love to be cc'd at alissa@neuseriver.org - or you can just click the link above!

For the following reasons, the proposed text change, OA 03-09, should be denied.
  • Since this action could be determined to be appropriate and allowed to occur through the existing variance procedure there is no reason that this change is required in order to protect the property owner's interests.  Failure to pass the change does not constitute a taking of private property.
  • The incredibly general language forwarded by the applicant opens the door to at least another 10 properties throughout Wake County that are also in water supply watersheds to implement similar projects, that would previously have not been allowed, without appropriate review by the public and elected officials.
  • Approving this project via text change does not ensure that the environmental protections discussed by the applicant will be implemented.  Approval by variance would include conditions which require the applicant to honor their word - this form of approval holds no such legal requirement.

Red Skelton's Pledge of Allegiance

Red Skelton--from his television show in 1969! Just think, he said this on his television show in 1969 and really had no clue it would ever come about. SAD, isn't it? What a wonderful and worthwhile clip to watch and share with all your friends and acquaintances!

This is one that needs to be passed on.

Press Release

FROM: David B. Bone, Town Manager

DATE: March 12, 2010

Re.: Proclamation of March 19, 2010 as Arbor Day in the Town of Wendell

Mayor J. Harold Broadwell, II, has proclaimed March 19th, 2010 as Arbor Day for the Town of Wendell. (Attached is a copy of the proclamation.) A celebration will be held at each of the local elementary schools in the community.

Wendell used to celebrate Arbor Day in October; however, the Wendell Tree Board decided to go with a different approach this year and in years to come. All three elementary schools in the area have embraced the idea. Lake Myra Elementary, Carver Elementary and Wendell Elementary will host special events to honor the importance of trees either on March 19th or March 26th. The Wendell Tree Board and the Town of Wendell will be planting one Willow Oak on the property of each school in honor of the graduating 5th graders. Each 5th grader will also receive a Loblolly Pine seedling to take home and plant in their own yards.

Wendell is proud to have an Arbor Day celebration as a member of Tree City USA program. Such a celebration is required for all Tree City USA communities. Wendell is happy to say it will be applying for its 27th consecutive year of being a member of the Tree City USA program.

The Arbor Day event comes on the heels of four Capital Tree Program awards being presented in the Wendell community on February 22nd, 2010. Two awards were presented to the Town of Wendell for a Swamp Chestnut Oak and a grove of Pecan trees in Wendell Park. Also, Sid and Anne Baynes received an award for the Southern Red Oak on their property, and Nora Cambier and Michael Unruh were presented an award for a Cedar located on their property.

However, the town’s planning staff will continue to enhance the draft document, preparing it for formal submittal in July.

The light has been placed on top of the stop sign at the end of Main Street.  The old light did not meet DOT’s guidelines/standards.  The addition of the new light and the reduction in speed to 30 mph should increase vehicle safety for motorists along this portion of Wendell Boulevard.
