Wake County Update

Best friends bring out the best in us
News to Wag About from the Wake County Animal Center

Animals Rescued from Research Lab

On September 17, 2010, the Wake County Animal Center responded to a call for assistance from the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) to collect cats and dogs that were being surrendered by Professional Laboratory and Research Services Inc. (PLRS) in Corapeake, North Carolina.  PLRS elected to surrender the animals in their facility after a video was released showing animals being treated improperly.

That day, the Wake County Animal Center dispatched staff and vehicles to collect 14 cats and 25 dogs from the research lab facility.  The 39 animals rescued by Wake County arrived back at the Animal Center at 11:30 pm. Four dogs and five cats were placed into Wake County’s Foster Program.  The remaining animals were transferred to other rescue groups including the SPCA of Wake County, Safe Haven, Triangle Beagle Rescue, and the Guilford County Animal Shelter.

Of the nine animals fostered by Wake County volunteers, two dogs have been adopted. The rest are still in foster care and are available for adoption.  If you cannot adopt one of these great cats or dogs, please consider making a donation to the Animal Center so we can continue to provide much-needed animal care and welfare services for these pets and many, many others who are surrendered and abandoned in our community every year.

Volunteering is Sweet

There are a lot of great rewards for volunteering as an Adoption Counselor
at the Wake County Animal Center. You get to help people, watch them fall in love with an animal in need, and know you are making a difference. And, thanks to the generosity of private citizens and businesses in Wake County, Adoption Counselors who volunteered on weekends during September received gift certificates for frozen custard! Consider becoming a volunteer today. We especially need Adoption Counselors and Dog Walkers.

Friday Update

Board of Commissioners Friday Update
Friday, October 22, 2010

ITEM 1. PUBLIC INFORMATION SESSIONS FOR OPEN SPACE PLAN
There will be two public meetings next week to discuss the development of the Comprehensive Recreation, Parks & Open Space Plan. The East Carolina University Department of Recreation & Leisure Studies will hold meetings on Tuesday, October 26 and Thursday, October 28 to gather input to use in the development of the plan that will guide the future of the Parks & Recreation Department. Both meetings are at 7 p.m. at Town Hall.
ITEM 2. INFORMATION ON BATTLE BRIDGE ROAD CLOSURE
Following is an excerpt of a letter to the editor from Commissioner Ira Fuller, please pay special attention to information on public meeting on Nov. 4:

The State of North Carolina, Department of Transportation, recently made the decision to temporarily close Battle Bridge Road that leads from Wendell Boulevard (US 64 Business) to Eagle Rock. This was an obvious surprise to the citizens of the community as well as the elected leaders of the Town of Wendell. None of us were given advance warning of this decision of inconvenience and inconsideration.

Representatives of the N.C. Department of Transportation were invited to attend a Board of Commissioners meeting and explain the reasons for their decision to close the road. They related it to the condition of the bridge and the costs estimated to repair and/or replace the bridge. They deemed it unsafe for trucks, buses and other heavy vehicles to cross. The Wendell Town Board took a strong stand of opposition to their decision.

Now a public information meeting is scheduled for area citizens on Thursday, November 4, 2010 at 5:00 P.M. at Hephzibah Church to finally explain the state’s plans to permanently close Battle Bridge Road.

All citizens having an interest or who may be affected by this adverse decision should attend and share their concerns. This may be the last opportunity you have to try and persuade the state to make the bridge safe and re-open the road again. They will make the final decision after receiving your input.
ITEM 3. OPERATION MEDICINE DROP
The Wendell Police Department, in conjunction with other Wake County law enforcement agencies will sponsor a town-wide drug abuse prevention event named Operation Medicine Drop on October 30, 2010. This event specifically targets individuals who have expired, old, or unused prescription medications in their homes in Wendell. The event involves the voluntary turn-in of old or unneeded pharmaceutical drugs at Wendell Fire Department, located at 2960 Wendell Boulevard, between the hours of 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.

The police department hopes this event will help reduce a significant amount of controlled pharmaceuticals that could be diverted to an escalating illicit market. More importantly, the police department hopes to use the event to educate the public on the dangers of pharmaceutical drug abuse, accidental poisonings, as well as responsible handling, security and destruction of prescription medications.

ITEM 5. HALLOWEEN SAFETY TIPS

Instruct your children not to eat any treats until they bring them home to be examined by you. This way you can check for any problem candy.

Instruct your child to never go into the home of a stranger or get into their car.

Make sure your child carries a flashlight, glow stick or has reflective tape on their costume to make them more visible to cars.

Children should always go out trick or treating accompanied by a responsible adult.

Because of increased foot traffic and the many children out on Halloween, the potential for automobile related accidents with young pedestrians increases four times on this night according to a CDC (Center for Disease Control) study, so……

Pay extra attention, particularly to crosswalks, intersections and the side of the road. Kids tend to walk along the curbs, cutting across the street to get to other homes. Keep scanning all around you as you drive, whether as thru traffic or along with your kids as they trick-or-treat.

Drive below the posted speed limit in residential areas during trick-or-treating.

Do not pass other vehicles that have stopped in the roadway, they could be dropping off children. This is more common in rural areas but can happen anywhere.

If you are dropping off or picking up your kids in an area, pull off the road into a safe spot and turn on your hazard lights to alert other motorists.

More tips can be found at http://www.cdc.gov/family/halloween/

Don't Mess With Children

7 Reasons Not To Mess With Children

A
little girl was talking to her teacher about whales.
The teacher said it was physically impossible for a whale to swallow a human because even though it was a very large mammal its throat was very small.
The little girl stated that Jonah was swallowed by a whale.
Irritated, the teacher reiterated that a whale could not swallow a human; it was physically impossible.
The little girl said, 'When I get to heaven I will ask Jonah'.
The teacher asked, 'What if Jonah went to hell?'
The little girl replied, 'Then you ask him'.

A
Kindergarten teacher was observing her classroom of children while they were drawing. She would occasionally walk around to see each child's work.
As she got to one little girl who was working diligently, she asked what the drawing was.
The girl replied, 'I'm drawing God.'

The teacher paused and said, 'But no one knows what God looks like..'
Without missing a beat, or looking up from her drawing, the girl replied, 'They will in a minute.'

A
Sunday school teacher was discussing the Ten Commandments with her five and six year olds.
After explaining the commandment to 'honour' thy Father and thy Mother, she asked, 'Is there a commandment that teaches us how to treat our brothers and sisters?'
Without missing a beat one little boy (the oldest of a family) answered, 'Thou shall not kill.'

O
ne day a little girl was sitting and watching her mother do the dishes at the kitchen sink. She suddenly noticed that her mother had several strands of white hair sticking out in contrast on her brunette head.
She looked at her mother and inquisitively asked, 'Why are some of your hairs white, Mum?'
Her mother replied, 'Well, every time that you do something wrong and make me cry or unhappy, one of my hairs turns white.'
The little girl thought about this revelation for a while and then said, 'Mummy, how come ALL of grandma's hairs are white?'

T
he children had all been photographed, and the teacher was trying to persuade them each to buy a copy of the group picture.
'Just think how nice it will be to look at it when you are all grown up and say, 'There's Jennifer, she's a lawyer,' or 'That's Michael, He's a doctor.'
A small voice at the back of the room rang out, 'And there's the teacher, she's dead.'

A
teacher was giving a lesson on the circulation of the blood. Trying to make the matter clearer, she said, 'Now, class, if I stood on my head, the blood, as you know, would run into it, and I would turn red in the face.'
'Yes,' the class said.

'Then why is it that while I am standing upright in the ordinary position the blood doesn't run into my feet?'
A little fellow shouted,

'Cause your feet ain't empty.'

The children were lined up in the cafeteria of a Catholic elementary school for lunch. At the head of the table was a large pile of apples.. The nun made a note, and posted on the apple tray:
'Take only ONE . God is watching.'

Moving further along the lunch line, at the other end of the table was a large pile of chocolate chip cookies.
A child had written a note, 'Take all you want. God is watching the apples.'

It doesn't matter how many people you send this to, just remember if it made you laugh, your friends will laugh too..
