Friday Update

Board of Commissioners Friday Update
Friday, September 24, 2010

ITEM 1. OPEN SPACE SURVEY BEING CONDUCTED THIS WEEKEND
Students from East Carolina will be conducting a phone survey this weekend in conjunction with the development of the Comprehensive Recreation, Parks & Open Space Plan. Phone calls will be made beginning on Sunday and continue through Tuesday, September 28. These phone calls will be made in an effort to determine public perception of the current state of recreation opportunities within the town as well as to find out what opportunities residents want to see included for the future.

There will be other opportunities for public involvement as well including school surveys to be sent out on October 8 and two more public community meetings on October 26 and October 28 at 7 p.m. in the courtroom. Please take one of these opportunities to be a part of the future of the Wendell Parks and Recreation Department.

ITEM 2. NEW SIGN REGULATIONS
Election season is now upon us and with the passage of the Unified Development Ordinance (UDO) the regulations concerning political signs have changed.

Currently signs may be erected 45 days before the election and be removed within five days following the election. There is no longer a limit on square footage for each lot.

Signs must be placed either behind the sidewalk or behind the ditch line. If neither of those is present, signs must be at least 5 feet from the curb (if present) or from the edge of pavement.

No signs, whether political in nature or not, are to be located on power or telephone poles, stop signs, or street signs. The Planning Department performs code enforcement each Monday for non-compliant signs as well as other things; however, both the police and public works departments are asked to help in the removal of any sign attached to a telephone pole, power pole, stop sign, street sign or other traffic control sign.

All signs collected should be placed in “the pit” at town hall, the area surrounded by brick in the parking lot. Someone from the Planning Department will tag the signs with a date the sign may be destroyed. Signs should not be thrown away without verifying the time limit on each of them. If you have questions, please contact the Planning Department at 365-4448.

ITEM 3. BUSY WEEK FOR PARKS AND RECREATION
The Wendell Parks and Recreation had another busy week last week of programs and activities at the Wendell Community Center. Expressions of Worship had a week full of acrobatic, dance and ballet classes. The Wendell Park tennis courts were full of kids on Tuesday and Thursday night as Kelley Connolly conducted her tennis program. On Thursday, September 16, 2010 East Wake Academy Middle School hosted a home cross country meet that packed the park with eager runners!

Downtown at the J Ashley Wall Town Square, on Saturday we had the Women’s Club and the J Ashley Town Square full of citizens and visitors at the St Eugene International Food Festival.

A quinceanera rental packed the community center on Saturday as well.

The fall baseball season continued with some exciting games that featured big wins, close games and even a tie.

TRANSIT WORKSHOPS :: Sept.22 & 23
SECOND ROUND OF TRANSIT WORKSHOPS - These community meetings on the Triangle Regional Transit Program (TRTP) will offer citizens the opportunity to provide feedback on transit corridors under study in Wake, Durham and Orange counties.  Click here to learn more.
*************************************************************************
The hot, dry summer has left us with below normal rainfall, and many areas in the state find themselves in drought-like conditions. In the Triangle, rain totals are 7.5 inches below normal. We are not experiencing 2007 conditions yet but discussions are increasingly being focused on water supplies.

NC SPIN will hold an NC Water Conference on October 12 at the Brownstone Hotel in Raleigh. A group of knowledgeable water experts will explain:

  • Who owns water?

  • Can anything be done about supply and demand?

  • How does water impact economic development?

  • What role should government play in water issues?

  • How can we finance water systems?

  • What are practical solutions to our issues?
Registration is $60 and includes a continental breakfast, hot lunch and handouts. Click link for more details and registration forms: http://www.ncspin.com/water_forum.php

Friday Update

Board of Commissioners Friday Update
Friday, September 17, 2010

ITEM 1. WENDELL WOMAN WINS SMART CAR FROM EXXON
At noon on Thursday, September 16, 2010, Linda Barton was presented with a 2010 Smart Fortwo Car (manufactured by Daimler AG) at the Wendell Mart/Exxon Station located on Wendell Boulevard. Representatives of ExxonMobil, Wendell Mart, Mayor Harold Broadwell, and family members of Linda Barton were in attendance to participate in the presentation.
Linda Barton doesn’t know exactly what day she won the contest or that she had even entered herself in a drawing for a Smart Car when she pulled into the Wendell Mart on Wendell Boulevard back in June. By using her Exxon credit card, she was automatically entered into the contest. Last week Ms. Barton received a package in the mail notifying her she was a possible winner in the contest. Now she is the lucky “13” winner of a new Smart Car. She is the 2nd winner in North Carolina.
Measuring just 8.8 feet in total length, 5.1 feet tall and 5.1 feet wide, the Smart Car has ultra low emissions and is sold in 40 countries. Mr. Randy Vandiver, Territory Manager for ExxonMobil, stated that “We want to be involved in the community. We want to encourage new card members and to continue to generate excitement around our brand. This is an example of rewarding our customers who have been loyal.”

Ridership numbers for the Zebulon/Wendell Express remain strong. Ridership numbers for the month of August were 1658. The express route began as a partnership between Triangle Transit, the Towns of Wendell and Zebulon, and the City of Raleigh. Weekday express bus service, connecting Wendell and Zebulon with downtown Raleigh, began in October of 2009.
The Wendell/Zebulon-Raleigh Express (ZWX) is a limited-stop route. Stops include Park-and-Ride lots in Zebulon and Wendell, WakeMed/Wake County Human Services off New Bern Ave, four stops at the state government complex, and the Moore Square Transit Station in downtown Raleigh.
The service runs at peak commute times (Monday-Friday 6-9am, 4-7pm). The fare for this route is $2.50 per one-way trip or $5.00 per round-trip. Discount fares and passes are offered. Several employers in downtown Raleigh offer free or discounted transit passes to employees.

In January of 2010, the Turnpike Authority began studying the possibility of a new toll road called the “Southeast Extension” that would connect to the Triangle Expressway (another toll road currently under construction in Wake and Durham Counties). The new road would span nearly 30 miles through southeastern Wake County and connect the NC 55 Bypass near Apex to the US 64/264 Bypass in Knightdale.
Three informational meetings are being scheduled by the North Carolina Turnpike Authority Engineers (NCTA) engineers to provide information, answer questions, and hear your opinion. The final approval of the project route is scheduled to be completed by 2013. The three meetings are scheduled as follows:

Wake County Update

Best friends bring out the best in us
News to Wag About from the Wake County Animal Center

Senior Cats for Senior Laps

The Wake County Animal Center receives approximately 8,600 abandoned, lost and surrendered cats and kittens every year. The cats that have the most difficulty finding new homes are the "senior" cats, who are actually the easiest to care for - because they are often very healthy, affectionate, calm, low-maintenance, and clean companions.

To encourage the adoption of senior cats, for the rest of 2010, anyone over the age of 60 who adopts a cat over the age of 5 will receive a discount of $10 off the regular adoption fee ($45 for unfixed cats, $15 for fixed cats). A complimentary health exam and 14-day follow-up care from VCA Animal Hospitals, bag of food, microchip, and vaccinations are all included.

Visit the Center today to find your new best friend!
