Friday Update

Board of Commissioners Friday Update
Friday, September 17, 2010

ITEM 1. WENDELL WOMAN WINS SMART CAR FROM EXXON
At noon on Thursday, September 16, 2010, Linda Barton was presented with a 2010 Smart Fortwo Car (manufactured by Daimler AG) at the Wendell Mart/Exxon Station located on Wendell Boulevard. Representatives of ExxonMobil, Wendell Mart, Mayor Harold Broadwell, and family members of Linda Barton were in attendance to participate in the presentation.
Linda Barton doesn’t know exactly what day she won the contest or that she had even entered herself in a drawing for a Smart Car when she pulled into the Wendell Mart on Wendell Boulevard back in June. By using her Exxon credit card, she was automatically entered into the contest. Last week Ms. Barton received a package in the mail notifying her she was a possible winner in the contest. Now she is the lucky “13” winner of a new Smart Car. She is the 2nd winner in North Carolina.
Measuring just 8.8 feet in total length, 5.1 feet tall and 5.1 feet wide, the Smart Car has ultra low emissions and is sold in 40 countries. Mr. Randy Vandiver, Territory Manager for ExxonMobil, stated that “We want to be involved in the community. We want to encourage new card members and to continue to generate excitement around our brand. This is an example of rewarding our customers who have been loyal.”

Ridership numbers for the Zebulon/Wendell Express remain strong. Ridership numbers for the month of August were 1658. The express route began as a partnership between Triangle Transit, the Towns of Wendell and Zebulon, and the City of Raleigh. Weekday express bus service, connecting Wendell and Zebulon with downtown Raleigh, began in October of 2009.
The Wendell/Zebulon-Raleigh Express (ZWX) is a limited-stop route. Stops include Park-and-Ride lots in Zebulon and Wendell, WakeMed/Wake County Human Services off New Bern Ave, four stops at the state government complex, and the Moore Square Transit Station in downtown Raleigh.
The service runs at peak commute times (Monday-Friday 6-9am, 4-7pm). The fare for this route is $2.50 per one-way trip or $5.00 per round-trip. Discount fares and passes are offered. Several employers in downtown Raleigh offer free or discounted transit passes to employees.

The new road would span nearly 30 miles through southeastern Wake County and connect the NC 55 Bypass near Apex to the US 64/264 Bypass in Knightdale.
Three informational meetings are being scheduled by the North Carolina Turnpike Authority Engineers (NCTA) engineers to provide information, answer questions, and hear your opinion.
