WakeUp Wake County Update

Bring a WakeUP Wake County Representative to Your Group or Community
Dear Friends,

Are you interested in getting an in-person perspective on growth and related issues in Wake County from the area's most respected citizen advocacy group?

If so, you can call on us.

The news about rapid growth in Wake County and the challenges is poses to transportation, schools, and our water supply is pretty sobering these days, but you can't fix what you don't understand. We would love to help communities and organizations throughout Wake gain a better understanding of the impacts of unmanaged, unsustainalbe growth on our County and our quality of life.

We're firming up our fall schedule of WakeUP speaking engagements and expect to be in towns throughout the county. We would love to add your group or community to our itinerary.

Our staff and volunteers have experience advocating for and educating others about growth in Wake County. More importantly, they are all citizens of our capital region that care about making sure we have a healthy environment, strong economy, world class educational system, and an empowered citizenry for years to come.

We welcome the chance to share what we know, and to share our excitement for the future we envision for Wake County.

Please call Tappan Vickery at 919-859-2177, or email her at tappan@wakeupwakecounty.org for more information, or to schedule a speaking engagement.

Success Story: Sweet Potato

Sweet Potato is a beautiful orange cat with diabetes who was surrendered at the Wake County Animal Center. Because WCAC did not have the resources to take care of diabetic cats, folks at the center sought help from other places; Diabetic Cats in Need came to the rescue! DCIN is a group that helps support diabetic cats in their original and adoptive homes, and they provide new homes and medical care for homeless diabetic cats. They posted information about Sweet Potato on a diabetic cat care forum which caught the eye of a DCIN case manager, who thought he would make a wonderful friend for her cat who just lost his companion. When Sweet Potato first arrived at his new home, he was underweight, had two bad teeth, and his coat was a mess. Now, Sweet Potato is doing great! He is off insulin and his diabetes is being controlled with a special diet. He has since gained two pounds and loves to climb, play tricks on everyone and relax with his new feline and human companions.  He is very much loved in his new home!

Featured Foster Dog: Sophie

Sophie is a sweet bundle of energy who loves affection and gives it back as well! She has a few tricks in her repertoire and is a pro at walking on a leash. She'd probably do best as the only family pet, but she can get along with other dogs. She's looking for a nice, quiet family to give her the love she deserves.

Featured Foster Cat: Mischa

Meet Mischa, a petite tortoiseshell shorthair mix who is about three years old. She's very friendly and lovable, and she gets along well with other cats. This special girl needs special grain-free food, which is readily available in pet stores. Mischa has always been an indoor cat, and would love to remain that way. She'll be a great addition to any family!

WakeUp Wake County Update

Public Hearings August 1 on Parks and Transit
Dear Friends,

Wake County Commissioners will consider repealing an impact fee for parks -- the Recreation Land Dedication Ordinance (RLDO) -- at their next meeting onMonday August 1, 2011 If you think new development should pay its fair share of the costs of growth, now is your chance to speak up!

Special interests are already working hard to eliminate this small, fair fee, so your voice is needed! The RLDO requires new developments to set aside land, or pay a fee in-lieu of, for future parks, open space, and recreation. Setting aside land for recreation is critical as development occurs. If we don't, we undermine our access to healthy living, a quality environment and higher property values.

Public Hearing on Raleigh Light Rail Routes

The Raleigh City Council will hold a public hearing on Monday August 1, 2011, at 7:00 pm on proposed light rail routes for downtown Raleigh.  This is a prime opportunity to offer comments on the latest proposal for train travel through Raleigh, a critical link in the regional transit plan being developed by Wake, Durham, and Orange Counties.

Raleigh's Passenger Rail Task Force recently announced its recommended route through downtown, known as D6a, which is a hybrid of two alternatives studied by Triangle Transit. "There is no one route that balances every need and overcomes every challenge," said Will Allen III of Raleigh, co-chair of the Task Force. The group's recommendation will be discussed at the public hearing.

Legislative Update: Senate Overturns Governor's Vetoes

The NC Senate returned to session last week and voted to overturn Governor Perdue's vetoes of two harmful environmental bills: S781 and S709. S781 (the Regulatory Reform Act of 2011) would prevent North Carolina from passing air and water regulations stricter than the minimum federal standards. S709 (Energy Jobs Act) would promote offshore drilling and move forward plans for hydrofracking, while ignoring renewable sources of energy.

The NC House is scheduled to consider these bills and a potential override on Monday July 25. However, the timing of the vote is almost entirely within the discretion of the House majority leadership, which may decide to hold the bills until they believe the votes are there to override them.
