WakeUp Wake County Update

SPEAK UP FOR TRANSIT TODAY!

Refer Friends to WakeUP Contest

Dear Friends,

Public transportation will improve the quality of life for all of us in Wake County.  It is that simple.
WakeUP Wake County continues to advocate for a bold, effective transit plan of expanded bus and commuter and light rail that brings our county together.  Given a projected DOUBLING of Wake's population, we must get a better transit system in place as soon as possible, or we'll experience constant traffic jams and declining air quality. But it won't happen unless we SPEAK UP for transit!
We need your help to make public transit a priority in Wake County!  Please take the following three steps:
(1)    Sign the Capital Area Friends of Transit (CAFT) petition to let your elected officials know you support a transit plan that includes rail and bus.
(2)    Contact your local mayor and county commissioners and ask them to support holding a referendum for a half cent sales tax to pay for the transit system.
(3)    Donate to WakeUP Wake County so that we can continue our leadership role running CAFT and educating the public about the benefits of public transit in the Triangle.
Remember, we are fighting for a high QUALITY OF LIFE for us all in Wake County.  We are working for you!

WakeUp Wake County Update

Expert Water Panel Says We Will Need to Pay More for Water and Sewer Services

Dear Friends,

The Water Utility Transition Advisory Task Force (WUTAT) -- a group of water infrastructure experts appointed by Raleigh's City Council -- recently presented their findings and recommendations to the City about planning for water supply and financial needs.  The WUTAT made two key points:
  • Be prepared to make additional increases to water and sewer rates over the coming years, while ensuring that rates reflect the true costs of providing services
  • Before taking further steps towards conservation, wait and see how effective current water conservation and tiered water rates are, and how they affect water demand

Governor Considering Bills, Hears Message from Conservation Advocates

Since the close of the legislative session last week, the Governor has received more than 200 bills that need to be signed or vetoed by June 30, or they become law without her taking action. Interest groups and citizens have flooded the Governor's office with phone calls and emails -- final efforts to sway policy on the environment, voting rights, and other critical (and contentious) issues.

One quarter of the 1000 phone calls were in reference to SB709, which would allow offshore oil and gas exploration, and inland shale gas exploration (also known as fracking). Of 32,000 email messages, 4,000 were in reference to SB781, which would prevent the state from enacting regulations stricter than federal standards. WakeUP Wake County spoke out against both of these bills, and it sounds like our message is being heard!

Tippi the Therapy Dog
We love to hear success stories, and Tippi's goes the extra mile.

Tippi, a black lab, spent 45 days in the center last year before catching the eye of volunteer puppy paparazzi Suze Foote. To be honest, it wasn't love at first sight. "She didn't make that much of an impression on me, since she is a Lab and I'm a Chow Chow fanatic." But following the sad loss of their own dog, Tippi's calm energy seemed to be just what the family needed.

Even though Tippi was tagged and micro-chipped, no family had come to claim her. The Foote household soon learned why: Tippi was constantly thirsty but also suffered from incontinence. Thanks to the patience of her new family (and the extensive plastic they laid down), Tippi now deals with her problem with the help of diapers.

But this isn't just a successful adoption story. Tippi went on to earn her Canine Good Citizen certification and then passed her Therapy Dog certification with flying colors. Her good manners and training have allowed Suze to combine two of her favorite causes- dogs and the elderly. Suze hopes to start visiting assisted living facilities with Tippi soon, and maybe Tippi can provide comfort for others in need of her calm, gentle energy.
Featured Fosters
Potential pets that have been taken into foster homes often get overlooked for adoption, but they need forever homes too!
Lilly

If you're looking for a laid-back walking partner, look no further than Lilly. This sweet girl loves to lounge around spend time with her people. She's house-trained and doesn't jump or bark, and since she's not a puppy you don't have to worry about her chewing up everything! If you need a friend to relax and unwind with, Lilly's looking for a new home.
Caroline
June is "adopt a cat" month! How about Caroline, one of our many amazing cats who is available for adoption?

Caroline is a beautiful 10 month old tabby. She is incredibly sweet and enjoys playing fetch with her foster mom. Caroline is a loving kitty that enjoys attention, although she is a bit afraid of being picked up and carried around. She is loving to other cats as well.
Watch her play on YouTube!
