Board of Commissioners Friday Update
Friday, September 24, 2010
ITEM 1. OPEN SPACE SURVEY BEING CONDUCTED THIS WEEKEND
Students from East Carolina will be conducting a phone survey this weekend in conjunction with the development of the Comprehensive Recreation, Parks & Open Space Plan. Phone calls will be made beginning on Sunday and continue through Tuesday, September 28. These phone calls will be made in an effort to determine public perception of the current state of recreation opportunities within the town as well as to find out what opportunities residents want to see included for the future.
There will be other opportunities for public involvement as well including school surveys to be sent out on October 8 and two more public community meetings on October 26 and October 28 at 7 p.m. in the courtroom. Please take one of these opportunities to be a part of the future of the Wendell Parks and Recreation Department.
ITEM 2. NEW SIGN REGULATIONS
Election season is now upon us and with the passage of the Unified Development Ordinance (UDO) the regulations concerning political signs have changed.
Currently signs may be erected 45 days before the election and be removed within five days following the election. There is no longer a limit on square footage for each lot.
Signs must be placed either behind the sidewalk or behind the ditch line. If neither of those is present, signs must be at least 5 feet from the curb (if present) or from the edge of pavement.
No signs, whether political in nature or not, are to be located on power or telephone poles, stop signs, or street signs. The Planning Department performs code enforcement each Monday for non-compliant signs as well as other things; however, both the police and public works departments are asked to help in the removal of any sign attached to a telephone pole, power pole, stop sign, street sign or other traffic control sign.
All signs collected should be placed in “the pit” at town hall, the area surrounded by brick in the parking lot. Someone from the Planning Department will tag the signs with a date the sign may be destroyed. Signs should not be thrown away without verifying the time limit on each of them. If you have questions, please contact the Planning Department at 365-4448.
