Re.: Proclamation of March 19, 2010 as Arbor Day in the Town of Wendell

Mayor J. Harold Broadwell, II, has proclaimed March 19th, 2010 as Arbor Day for the Town of Wendell. (Attached is a copy of the proclamation.) A celebration will be held at each of the local elementary schools in the community.

Wendell used to celebrate Arbor Day in October; however, the Wendell Tree Board decided to go with a different approach this year and in years to come. All three elementary schools in the area have embraced the idea. Lake Myra Elementary, Carver Elementary and Wendell Elementary will host special events to honor the importance of trees either on March 19th or March 26th. The Wendell Tree Board and the Town of Wendell will be planting one Willow Oak on the property of each school in honor of the graduating 5th graders. Each 5th grader will also receive a Loblolly Pine seedling to take home and plant in their own yards.

Wendell is proud to have an Arbor Day celebration as a member of Tree City USA program. Such a celebration is required for all Tree City USA communities. Wendell is happy to say it will be applying for its 27th consecutive year of being a member of the Tree City USA program.

The Arbor Day event comes on the heels of four Capital Tree Program awards being presented in the Wendell community on February 22nd, 2010. Two awards were presented to the Town of Wendell for a Swamp Chestnut Oak and a grove of Pecan trees in Wendell Park. Also, Sid and Anne Baynes received an award for the Southern Red Oak on their property, and Nora Cambier and Michael Unruh were presented an award for a Cedar located on their property.
