Board of Commissioners Friday Update

Friday, March 5, 2010

ITEM 1. WENDELL POLICE DEPARTMENT RECIEVES GRANT FROM THE WAKE COUNTY ABC BOARD
This week, the town was notified that its ABC grant application for the Police Department was approved. The grant will support a year-round program to raise awareness about impaired driving and a summer camp program involving drug and alcohol awareness and sports activities.
The press release about this grant is attached.

ITEM 2. UPDATE ON DRAFT ETJ EXPANSION REQUEST / REPORT
Planning Department staff met on Thursday March 3rd, 2010 with the Wake County Planning Department staff and Community Services Manager Tim Maloney involving the draft ETJ report.  The report, submittal timeline and approval process were discussed. Once the document is formally submitted, the timeline for approval is a minimum of six months. As you are aware, the town will not be able to finalize its ETJ extension application until the UDO has been completed. However, the town’s planning staff will continue to enhance the draft document, preparing it for formal submittal in July.

CORPUD Assistant Directors Kenny Waldroup and Robert Massengill are planning to attend the Public Works, Facilities and Infrastructure Committee Meeting on Tuesday, March 16th at 2:00 p.m. to discuss the merger pro forma. Raleigh will also have Jeff Adkins at the meeting. Jeff Adkins is Raleigh’s consultant working on the pro forma’s (he has made presentations in Wendell in the past). We encourage all elected officials to attend this meeting, if possible. We will send Jeff’s presentation to the Board prior to the meeting. Commissioners may want to review the merger agreement prior to the committee meeting, as well.

ITEM 7. CAUTION SIGNAL AT MAIN STREET AND WENDELL BOULEVARD
DOT removed the flashing caution light from the intersection of Main Street and Wendell Boulevard yesterday.  It was replaced with a new flashing, solar-powered red light that complies with DOT’s updated standards, making it more visible to motorists. The light has been placed on top of the stop sign at the end of Main Street.  The old light did not meet DOT’s guidelines/standards.  The addition of the new light and the reduction in speed to 30 mph should increase vehicle safety for motorists along this portion of Wendell Boulevard.
