Legislators ignore opposition to budget cuts and bad bills  Dear Friends,   Awash with protests, letters, phone calls, and emails opposing dramatic state budget cuts and a number of bad bills, the NC House of Representatives carelessly marched forward and voted to approve legislation that will reverse progress for emerging sustainable communities across North Carolina. Worrisome NC House budget approved: Sizable cuts to NCDENR will weaken programs that currently serve to protect your endangered drinking water supply and deteriorating air quality.  Our region's high quality public schools are under attack as a result of the House budget, which seeks to strip over 15,000 education jobs across the state. Anti-rail language also exists in the approved House budget, which will require an extensive legislative review process prior to accepting federal rail funds (section28.15). H422, "No High-Speed Rail Money from Federal Gov't" revived: On April 28 the NC House stunned transit and economic development advocates across the state in its move to raise from the dead H422 "No High-Speed Rail Money from Federal Gov't".  The bill is currently being debated in the NC Senate. SB183, the billboard bill, undergoes changes: Though still alive, the billboard bill has been scaled back significantly.  A provision that would have allowed existing billboards to be converted to digital was dropped, yet clear-cutting allowances have increased.  WakeUP Wake County encourages you to voice your opposition to regressive actions made by the NC House of Representatives. Write a letter to the editor of your local newspaper explaining how cuts to air and water protection programs, education, and unnecessary burdens on public transit progress will negatively effect the quality of your life and the future of our community. __________________________________________________________________ Raleigh's New Development Code: Raleigh's New Code aims to encourage more compact, high quality development throughout Raleigh.
