Communities all across the country are increasingly attuned to the reality that quality of life is directly connected to how we grow and develop. Smart growth, a public policy planning innovation, focuses on creating sustainable, high quality communities that are good for developers and citizens alike.
Towns from across the U.S. met in Charlotte last week to report success stories and challenges in building green, livable, walkable, prosperous cities and towns. Why did Charlotte host the National Smart Growth Conference? Our region is in a severe drought! January 2011 turned out to be an extremely dry month. Receiving only a third of the average rainfall for a typical January, our region has returned to a 'severe' drought status. Scientists are worried by the implications of a winter drought on water capacity for the coming summer. Read more
