Wake County Update

Best friends bring out the best in us
News to Wag About from the Wake County Animal Center

Another Successful Year in the Books!

The thing about numbers and statistics is that while they don't always tell the whole story, they never lie. And according to the numbers, the Wake County Animal Center had its best year on record:

3935 animals adopted from the Animal Center
1470 animals were transferred to various rescue groups
2512 rabies vaccines were administered and 835microchips were given out at 12 clinics
One of the most telling statistics concerns the volunteers, without whom these amazing numbers wouldn't have been possible. At the start of 2010, the Animal Center had roughly 30 active volunteers. But by the end of the year, that number has exploded to over 230 active volunteers! And in 2010 those volunteers logged an amazing 9579.17 hours.

But despite the commendable effort from the volunteers and staff, there are always more animals to foster, more dogs to walk, more kitties to cuddle, more pictures to take, and more laundry to wash and fold. And with the 50% intake increase since July 2010, the Animal Center needs your help more than ever.

Find out here about exciting volunteer opportunities or here for other ways you can help make the Animal Center even more successful in 2011!

Fido Fitness Winner Laurie Kenny Goes the Distance!

Volunteer Laurie Kenny, pictured above with her dog Zada, walked her way to victory in the Animal Center's first Fido Fitness contest with an amazing 98,331 steps in the months of October and November 2010. Given the average female stride length is 2.2 feet, Laurie walked an amazing 40 miles!

Fido Fitness is one of many volunteer duties at the Wake County Animal Center. Volunteers that sign up for Fido Fitness walk the dogs in the shelter and make sure the dogs get plenty of exercise.

A volunteer since only mid-August 2010, Laurie is a regular at the Animal Center and thought Fido Fitness was the perfect opportunity to combine her love for dogs and walking, and a way to help the dogs at the Center get much-needed exercise and socialization.

"It has definitely been rewarding for me, and even if you only walk one dog, that is one dog who gets a chance to go outside," said Laurie, hoping to encourage others to share her experience.

Keep up the great work, Laurie!

Sophie the Sweetie
Sweet and shy, Sophie is a
three-year-old American Bulldog-Hound mix looking for a calm and affectionate forever home. She is a little timid, but is good with other dogs and children. A very smart girl, Sophie already knows basic commands such as "sit" and "stay" and her foster mom says she is a fast learner.

A Special Thank You...

to Sonshine Gymnastics in Holly Springs for their donations this holiday season.

The family-owned gymnastics facility collected treats, toys, and other supplies for the Animal Center and donated them just before Christmas.

Thank you for all your support from the very appreciative staff and volunteers of the Wake County Animal Center
