ITEM 1. DRAFT UDO DOCUMENT AND AMENDMENTS ON TOWN WEBSITE

The Draft UDO document and a list of amendments have both been placed on the town’s website for review. The amendments discussed and voted upon at the July 12, 2010 Board meeting have been incorporated making it a complete document for the public hearing at the July 26, 2010 Board meeting.

These documents can be viewed at www.townofwendell.com by accessing the path of town departments, planning & zoning, and then the Wendell UDO page link on the left side of the page.

ITEM 2. WENDELL LIBRARY 60^TH ANNIVERSARY

Thanks to those that attended and joined in the library’s 60^th Birthday celebration. Story time started at 6 p.m. and was followed by crafts and activities as well as birthday cake and punch.

Thursday, July 15, 2010, turned out to be a great day for our teams who participated in SWAC Sectional and Tar Heel Leagues, Inc. State Tournaments. Everyone opened tournament play with a win!

U10 Girls Softball Tarheel Leagues State Tournament- Smithfield
-Wendell U10 All Stars come from behind to score five unanswered runs to defeat Johnston Co. East 5-2 in the opening round of the 2010 Tar Heel Leagues, Inc. State Tournament. Wendell will play today at 1pm in Smithfield.

U14 Girls Softball Tarheel Leagues State Tournament- Four Oaks
- Wendell U14 All Stars defeat Granite Falls 11-1 in the opening round of the U14 Tarheel Leagues, Inc State Tournament. Wendell will play at 12pm today in Four Oaks.

11-12 Boys SWAC Tournament- Kenly
-Wendell 11-12 All Stars opened SWAC Tournament play with a 12-5 win over the Clinton All Stars. Wendell will play today at 8:00pm vs. Holly Springs.

9-10 Boys SWAC Tournament- Lillington
-Wendell 9-10 All Stars opened up SWAC Tournament play with a victory vs. Spring Lake. Wendell will play at 4pm today in Lillington.

ITEM 4. TERRIFIC TURNOUT FOR TRIANGLE TRANSIT

Thanks to those that attended and provided information at the Triangle Regional Transit Program public information meeting in Knightdale Town Hall this week. There was an excellent turn out by residents, staff and elected officials from Eastern Wake County as well as Garner and Wake Forest.

Information was presented about the transportation corridors and technologies being considered. Light rail, commuter rail, bus rapid transit, and an expanded bus service are up for discussion. Information from the meetings will be used to determine "locally preferred alternatives" on each of the rail transportation corridors. The first round of public information sessions involving regional transit service has been completed. This public input will be entered into the analysis of alternatives for services.

Mayor Broadwell will be coordinating updates by Triangle Transit representatives to Wendell’s board and citizens after the first of the year.

The Permit Extension Act of 2009 has been extended. A copy of the Act is attached. This was the last bill passed by the General Assembly at 4:30 am on Saturday, July 10, immediately prior to their adjournment. Here are some of the highlights:

1. It extended the tolling period (Section 4) by 1 year (until the end of 2011).

2. It added a provision that clarifies that the act does not apply to bonds and other contracts (Section 5).

3. It allows a local government to "opt out" of this extension by passing a resolution (Section 4.1).

4. It also added language to provide for a local government to terminate the applicability of this act to certain developments under certain circumstances (Section 7.1).

Contracts have been reviewed, signed and executed with Browe Construction to begin work on the Downtown sidewalk project. Staff met with Browe construction on Thursday, July 15, 2010 and discussed the project start date. The work schedule has been revised and is scheduled to begin on Monday, July 26, 2010.

Hugh Patrick Alford (of Alford Auction & Estate Sales Inc.) will be holding his first auction here in Wendell at 15 W. Fourth Street on Saturday, July 17, 2010.  The auction will start at 4:00.  A preview of the auction items will be available this evening, starting at noon and ending at 7:00.  Interested parties can view many of the items in advance and obtain additional informational by going to ‘www.auctionzip.com’ and searching by zip code for his auction here in Wendell.

The Wendell Farmer’s Market is open Saturdays from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Wendell Woman’s Club at the corner of West Third and Cypress streets.

Wendell t-shirts and hoodies are available from the chamber. T-shirts are $15 and hoodies (with zipper) are $30.
