Board of Commissioners Friday Update

ITEM 1. TOWN HALL CLOSED – JULY 4, 2010
Town Hall will be closed on Monday July 5, 2010 in recognition of Independence Day. Offices will reopen at 8:00 am on Tuesday, July 6, 2010.
ITEM 2. JULY 4, 2010 CELEBRATION
Celebrate the Fourth with a parade along Main Street. The parade starts at 3 pm at the railroad tracks at Main Street. Decorate your non-motorized wheels. Hot dogs, lemonade, watermelon, cotton candy, face painting and balloon hats will be available at J. Ashley Wall Towne Square.
ITEM 3. LITTLE LEAGUE DISTRICT 6 BASEBALL TOURNAMENT
The staff of the Wendell Parks and Recreation has been busy preparing Carver Elementary School fields for the 2010 Tar Heel Leagues 11-12 District 6 Little League baseball tournament.
All Stars from Knightdale, Nash County, Rocky Mount, Wake Forest American, Wake Forest National, Zebulon, Wendell White and Wendell Blue will be taking the field with hopes of claiming the District 6 championship and advancing to the 2010 State Tournament in Rocky Mount July 22-25.
First round matchups will be played on July 6th; on Carver Field 1, Rocky Mount vs. Wake Forest American will play at 6:00 pm. Knightdale vs. Wendell Blue will play at 8:00pm on Carver 2, Wendell White vs. Nash County will play at 6:00pm; Wake Forest Nationals vs. Zebulon will play at 8:00pm.
The tournament runner up will also advance to compete in the State Tournament. Staff is looking forward to an exciting week of Tar Heel Leagues baseball!
ITEM 4. COMMUNITY CENTER SUMMER SCHEDULE
Following the upcoming Tarheel League Tournament, the Wendell Community Center will revert to its summer schedule beginning Wednesday, July 14, 2010. The Community Center will close on Wednesdays at 6:00 pm from July 14 through the month of August unless the community center has been reserved for special events. To reserve the Community Center, you may contact Phillip Smith at 366-2266.
ITEM 5. WENDELL FALLS
Wake County Watershed Manager Debbie Greene recently inspected sediment control measures in Wendell Falls and reports that the overall project is in good shape. The county holds 11 separate erosion control permits within areas of Wendell Falls. In most of these areas the vegetation is stabilizing and measures are functioning effectively. No major deficiencies were noted but in most areas permits cannot be closed until some level of building has occurred within the subdivision.
Mrs. Greene also spoke with Tom Needham of Burroughs & Chapin this week. He said he would continue to manage the property for ongoing maintenance and stabilization work.
ITEM 6. ANTHEMION AWARDS
Capital Area Preservation is now accepting nomination for the 2010 Anthemion Awards. Nominations can recognize contributions in a variety of areas including, but not limited to: Residential, Commercial, Landscape, Adaptive Use, Advocacy, Leadership, Professional Commitment, Education, Craftsmanship, Lifetime Achievement and Neighborhood and Community.
The nomination deadline is August 12, 2010 and the award ceremony will be held September 20, 2010 at The Irregardless Café, 901 West Morgan Street, Raleigh. Recent recipients include Bruce and Marjorie Lynch and 2SL Design Build for Residential Infill Design and Construction of the Lynch residence in Wendell.

ITEM 7. CAMP CHOICES - WENDELL POLICE DEPARTMENT
Spaces are going fast so sign up today!!! The Police Department has finalized plans for its first camp, “Camp Choices.” The camp will run August 2, 2010 through August 6, 2010. Staff from the Poe Center will be on hand to educate Wendell’s youth on choices and consequences related to tobacco and alcohol as well as various other topics.
The Tahoe and trailer that were funded by the ABC board have been fully striped. Color Graphics developed a logo for the camp and also a theme for our Fatal Vision training. The camp has space for 40 participants and a limited number of spaces remain. For more information, please contact Sgt. Jody Wall of the Wendell Police Department at 365-4444.
ITEM 8. TRIANGLE REGIONAL TRANSIT PROGRAM, JULY 14, 2010
The Triangle Regional Transit Program has been established to focus on highway, transit and transportation management alternatives throughout the region. Public meetings have been scheduled throughout the Triangle during the months of June and July. One of six public meetings will be held on July 14, 2010 in the Knightdale Town Hall from 5:30 until 8 pm.

A public hearing on the UDO was held at June 28, 2010 Board of Commissioners meeting.
The UDO Committee reconvened on Friday, July 2, 2010 at the Wendell Community Center
The next meeting of the UDO Committee will be held on Tuesday, July 6, 2010 at 4:30 in the Wendell Community Center
A vote on the UDO by the Wendell Board of Commissioners is currently scheduled for July 12, 2010

Wendell Farmer’s Market – The Farmer’s Market will be closed on Saturday July 3, 2010
The Wendell Farmer’s Market is open Saturdays from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Wendell Woman’s Club at the corner of West Third and Cypress streets.
Wendell t-shirts and hoodies are available from the chamber. T-shirts are $15 and hoodies (with zipper) are $30.
