Wendell board fires manager
WENDELL - Town commissioners cut their manager loose last night. Following a closed-door session – the board’s third in eight days, commissioners voted unanimously to fire David Bone from the position he has held since November, 2007.

Commissioners named Planning Director Teresa Piner as the interim manager, but board members did not discuss how or when they would name a permanent manager.

Bone, 40, becomes the first political casualty of the new majority elected in November.
Commissioner Carol Hinnant, who made the motion to fire Bone, declined to comment on the decision, referring questions to town attorney Jim Cauley.

Asked if residents deserved an explanation for the decision, Hinnant again referred comments to Cauley. She said she didn’t want to comment for this story because of negative news coverage the town has received in the past.

Bone defended his work during the time he served as the town’s CEO.
“I’ve carried out the direction and the policies of the board of commissioners to the best of my abilities. I know that managers work at the pleasure of the governing body and the board has the right to make the decision they have made,” Bone said.

Bone’s employment agreement with the town calls for him to earn a severance package that includes six months salary, or $44,439, provided he doesn’t find other employment within that time.

He said he plans to remain in public service.
