Wake County Update

Best friends bring out the best in us
News to Wag About from the Wake County Animal Center

Celebrate the Newest Addition to the Animal Center

Join us for a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony on Wednesday, June 30, 2010 at 10 a.m. to celebrate the expansion of the Wake County Animal Care, Control, and Adoption Center. The expansion provides for 75 new dog holding areas and 75 new cat holding areas, as well as a new air conditioning system for all of the animals at the Animal Center.
The facility expansion and upgrade is just in time! Beginning July 1, 2010,  all lost and stray pets in the County will be taken to the Wake County Animal Center. As a result, a 50 percent increase in the number of animals entering the Center is expected -- total animal intake will increase to approximately 18,000 animals per year.

Help Reunite Lost Pets and Their Owners

Did you know that two out of every three pets that arrive at the Wake County Animal Center are lost or stray pets? If you lose or find a pet in Wake County (or a surrounding county), you can now go to www.trianglelostpets.orgThis is a new web site, sponsored by Wake County, where anyone can post descriptive information and view maps of where pets have been lost or found.

If you are trying to find your pet, you should also view the gallery of animals currently at the Wake County Animal Center. The Center receives about 150 strays every week. Stray animals are listed in the adoption gallery immediately, although there is a three-to-five day holding period before any stray animal is available for
adoption
, which allows owners time to reclaim their lost pets. (Note:  If you live in the City of Raleigh, and you lose your pet before July 1, you should check with the SPCA Lost and Found Center for your lost pet.  After July 1, all citizens throughout Wake County, including the City of Raleigh, should check the Wake County Animal Center adoption gallery for their lost pet.)

Of course, the best way to ensure you will be reunited with your dog or cat is identification. Make sure your pet always wears a collar and tag with a correct address and phone number, and have your pet .microchipped

Have you Hugged a Kitten Today?

The Wake County Animal Center has dozens of cuddly cats and kittens available today! Visit the Center today to find your next best friend or browse the online adoption gallery.

Many of these kittens come from unplanned litters. Help to "fix" the pet overpopulation problem today by
spaying and neutering. These surgeries help pets too, by preventing certain types of cancers, reducing some aggression and behavior problems, and making pets less likely to roam.
