The NC Watershed Alliance's 10th Annual Clean Water Lobby Day is fast approaching and the Neuse RIVERKEEPER® Foundation will be participating again this year. For a decade, Clean Water Lobby Day attendees have pushed for meaningful legislation that protects and conserves our state's valuable water resources.
This year the event will be held on Wednesday, June 23 from 8:00am to 3:00pm at the State Capitol Building in Raleigh and we need your help advocating for the top water issues in North Carolina. Constituents from all across the state will come dressed in blue and ready to lobby their legislators. Check-in will take place in the 1000 Court of the Legislative Building where all lobbying materials and instructional information will be provided. Please plan to join us for this important and fun annual occasion; no experience is necessary and it is a great opportunity to meet the men and women you have elected to run our state and let your voice be heard.
Please let us know if you plan to attend or have questions about Clean Water Lobby Day on June 23; we are planning a carpool from New Bern, lunch in Raleigh, and we would love for you to join us!
We need your help lobbying for the following water issues on Clean Water Lobby Day:
- Water modeling. Long term, North Carolina needs better water withdrawal planning and permitting to ensure that we have enough water to meet our needs and still protect the health of our river, and that issue may be addressed next year. This year, non-regulatory bills H1763/S1170, Improve River Basin Modeling, would give local governments and business better scientific information to understand how new water withdrawals will affect existing users and river health.
- Steep slopes. Unwise development on steep slopes in North Carolina’s mountains has led to fatal landslides and ongoing erosion that smothers streams and rivers. H1870, Safe Slope Construction Act, requires the state Sediment Control Commission and local governments to adopt standards for safer construction on steep slopes.
- Offshore drilling. While the permitting for drilling off the NC coast remains unclear because of the Gulf oil spill, our state can take some steps to protect itself from a similar disaster. H2014/S836, Remove Damage Cap/ Review Offshore Oil Spills would require state regulators to study and apply the lessons of the Gulf spill to avert risks to North Carolina’s coast. It would also ensure that companies drilling off North Carolina’s coast (if they are ever permitted) would face unlimited liability for damages in the state.
