Board of Commissioners Friday Update

ITEM 1. EVENTS SET FOR DOWNTOWN TONIGHT
A wine tasting, silent auction, and book signing will be held tonight at Wit’s End from 6 to 8 p.m. Proceeds from the silent auction will benefit the Wendell Historical Society. Kim Reynolds, daughter of Wendell residents Sally and Curt Phipps, will be signing copies of her new book "Alex Charles: The Evening Oak". The book will also be available for purchase at tonight’s event.
The Kila Company is having their monthly jazz concert tonight at 6:30 p.m. at the store located at 28 N. Main Street.
ITEM 2. TRIANGLE REGIONAL TRANSIT PROGRAM, JULY 14, 2010
The Triangle Regional Transit Program has been established to focus on highway, transit and transportation management alternatives throughout the region. Public meetings have been scheduled throughout the Triangle during the months of June and July. One of the six public meetings will be held on July 14, 2010 in the Knightdale Town Hall from 5:30 until 8 pm.
ITEM 3. DRUGS UNCOVERED HELD IN WENDELL COMMUNITY CENTER
The Poe Center (
http://www.poehealth.org/) and the Town of Wendell / Wendell Police Department hosted a Drugs Uncovered: What Parents Need to Know event on Wednesday, June 2 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Wendell Community Center. Thirteen individuals participated in the event including parents, clergy, law enforcement officials and local residents. The event involved interactive sessions concerning current drug and alcohol trends in our community.
ITEM 4. COMMUNITY WATCH GROUP HOLDS FIRST MEETING
The first meeting of the reorganized community watch took place at El Cerro restaurant on Thursday, June 3. The group that met was from the neighborhoods included in the Selma Road, Third Street, Hollybrook Road, and Wendell Boulevard blocks. About 15 people met and discussed the direction of the new group and problems in their neighborhoods. Lynn Pulley, community watch leader for that area, spoke briefly at the meeting; however it was led by block captains Jonathan and Holly Mouton. Community watch information and contacts can be found on the town’s website or by calling the police department. This meeting was attended by Chief Vance Johnson and Sgt. Landon Hare.
ITEM 5. SPECIAL CALLED MEETING OF THE WENDELL PLANNING BOARD
A Special Called Meeting of the Wendell Planning Board was held on Thursday June 3, 2010 in the Wendell Courtroom. The Meeting focused on Chapters 1-6 of the UDO and the zoning map as well as concerns expressed by the Planning Board and citizens.
ITEM 6. OLD BATTLE BRIDGE ROAD BRIDGE CLOSURE
NCDOT has declared the bridge at Old Battle Bridge Road structurally unsafe. As a result the bridge has been closed indefinitely accordingly to Joey Hopkins, DOT Deputy Division Engineer. It is estimated repair to the bridge would exceed $100,000. DOT is considering several options – repairing the bridge, replacing the bridge and permanent closure of the bridge.
At the special called meeting on June 3, the Planning Board voted to send a letter to DOT asking for the bridge to be replaced and recommended the Town Board draft a resolution in support of the bridge’s replacement.
ITEM 7. CONTINUATION OF 5/25 PUBLIC WORKS, FACILITIES AND
INFRASTRUCTURE MEETING
The review of merger projects resumed on June 2 in the Wendell Courtroom during a continued meeting of the Public Works, Facilities and Infrastructure committee meeting. Mr. Chris Windley of McKim & Creed was present to discuss projects in more depth as well as their impact on the town’s overall utility system. The discussions were designed to assist the board in its efforts to address the CORPUD pro forma and Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) projects involved in the merger.
ITEM 8. UPDATE ON TOWN WEB SITE
Staff is looking to schedule a meeting next week with Reed Whitesell to discuss the status of the new town / economic development website. Staff continues to work with Wilmington Design Company and Holland Consulting on the addition of information to the site. Staff has contacted local real estate brokers and realtors to obtain information on available properties.
ITEM 9. ARRA PROJECT – # 5100-EB – BUFFALO AND THIRD STREETS
Progress has been slowed due to unusual amounts of rainfall in the area during the last two weeks. As soon as weather permits, construction will resume. The project completion date is scheduled for August.
ITEM 10. ARRA PROJECT - #5100-EA – CROSSWALK AT MAIN AND THIRD
The crosswalk has been completed and Staff is working toward closeout with the contractor and NCDOT. DOT stated this project should be completed by July 30.
ITEM 11. RIBBON CUTTING – RIGHT CHOICE HOME CARE & STAFFING
A ribbon-cutting will be held at Right Choice Health Care located at 30 N. Main Street on Saturday June 5 at noon. Right Choice Health care is a sister company of Giga-Net Solutions, a privately held staffing firm which specializes in providing home care and health care services.

Items for discussion included the Triangle Regional Transit Program which was addressed under Item 2.
The Technical Coordinating Committee (TCC) of CAMPO voted to recommend funding for the Rolesville Road/Wendell Boulevard TIA, Design and NEPA in the amount of $96,000. This recommendation will be forwarded to the Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) for action at its next meeting.

Those in attendance were presented with updated brochures on Corporate Relocation Incentives and Services, Manufacturers Directory, major Employers Directory, Small Business Resource Guides, and Regional Data Material, and Shovel Ready Sites.

ITEM 14. COMMITTEE NOTES
The following is an update of committee assignments, information and action:
The Public Works Committee met on Tuesday, June 1, 2010 at 5:30 in the Wendell Courtroom. The committee continued its discussion of the capital projects involved with the CORPUD pro forma. See Item #6 above.
UDO Ad Hoc Sub-Committee
The first six chapters of the UDO were presented to the Board of Commissioners on May 24. Chapters 7-19 will be presented to the Board on June 14.
The UDO Committee will reconvene on Thursday, June 24 at 7 p.m. in the Wendell Community Center. This meeting will be after the scheduled vote on the UDO by the Planning Board and before the public hearing at the Monday, June 28, 2010 Board of Commissioners meeting. The Board of Commissioners is encouraged to attend this meeting so the elected officials and UDO Committee members will have an opportunity to discuss comments and recommendations being forwarded from the Planning Board.
A public hearing on the UDO is scheduled for the June 28th Board of Commissioners meeting.
ITEM 15. UPCOMING CHAMBER EVENTS
The Wendell Chamber of Commerce will hold a Women In Business monthly meeting for women business owners at El Cerro on Wednesday, June 9 at noon. This month’s guest speaker will be Diane Wasney of Dove Chocolate Discoveries.
The Wendell Farmers Market continues to be open each Saturday from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. On June 12th the market will hold a special showing of old and antique farming equipment as well as having face painting.
Wendell t-shirts and hoodies are available from the chamber. T-shirts are $15 and hoodies (with zipper) are $30.
The Chamber will host a Notary Public class on Wednesday, June 23 from 9 a.m. until 4: 30 p.m. Call the Chamber at 365-6318 to register.
