New report predicts a healthy demand in the Triangle for commuter rail!
A new study released yesterday, says that by 2022 the N.C. Railroad could serve at least 3 million riders a year in commuter trains on its 140-mi. line between Greensboro and Goldsboro. Across the nation, commuter trains (conventional diesel locomotives) are increasingly being used to carry suburban residents during rush hour periods to jobs and universities in urban areas.  A commuter rail line running between Goldsboro and Greensboro would link a business corridor containing 18 colleges and universities, effectively reducing traffic congestion and improving air quality.  Read more about the study in Bruce Siceloff's article, 'Study: Rush-hour rail could ease commuter crunch'.
The study coincides with the recent release of a draft design proposal for Union Station, a future transit center in downtown Raleigh that could incorporate a variety of transit services including commuter rail and light rail. Please provide feedback on the proposal by June 11, 2010.  Submit all comments to Martin Stankus, Senior Planner with the City of Raleigh's Planning Department.
