Board of Commissioners Friday Update
Friday, May 21, 2010
ITEM 1. CHAMBER CONCERT SERIES CONTINUES – FRIDAY, MAY 21ST
The Wendell Chamber of Commerce’s Spring Concert Series at J. Ashley Wall Town Square continues tonight (Friday, May 21st). The NC Revelers Orchestra (Big Band Swing - Jazz Orchestra) will be playing from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Bring your lawn chairs and enjoy the music. The American Legion will be selling hot dogs and drinks. The Driven Praise Band will complete the series on June 25th.
ITEM 2. INSTALLATION OF NEW SERVER
Knightdale I/T staff and a contractor installed the town’s new computer server and additional computer equipment this week. There were a few hiccups with the town website and employees’ connectivity to the internet, but everything should be worked-out.
ITEM 3. UPDATE ON TOWN WEB SITE
The manager had a telephone / online conference with the Wilmington Design Company this week concerning progress on the town / economic development website. The website is coming along well. We should receive a link to review the site in the next week or so. The website will not “go live” until the town feels that it is ready to do so.
The website design is done, and the administration framework is complete. The town portions of the web site should be pretty much ready to go when the company provides the link. We will need to work with our consultants to finish the economic development content (information about available properties, for example).
One feature that was shown in the conference call was how each department will have its own calendar of events and “news” sections. The departments’ events and news will be combined into “global” events and news sections, as well.
ITEM 4. PREPARATIONS FOR WENDELL POLICE DEPARTMENT’S CAMP CHOICES MOVING FORWARD
The Wendell Police Department is holding its first summer camp open to current fourth and fifth graders. Camp “Choices” has been scheduled at the Wendell Community Center for the week of August 2nd through the 6th. The camp, funded through the Wake County ABC Board, will feature various speakers, Gang Resistant Education And Training (GREAT), drug and alcohol awareness, as well as many other items to help children make positive “Choices”. Art, music, and a host of sport activities will be used daily to make this camp a fun learning experience. The camp, snacks, lunch and accident insurance is free to all participants.
Applications have been distributed through the local schools, and more are available at the Wendell Police Department. Only 40 applicants will be accepted, and the spots are filling-up quickly. Ten applications have been received within the first three week of distribution. Applications are due by July 1st.
ITEM 5. MEETINGS THE MANAGER ATTENDED THIS WEEK
DAY DATE EVENT
Wed. 5/19 Knightdale Budget meeting (in support of
Wendell’s request for assistance with the East Wake Senior Center facility maintenance costs)
Thurs. 5/20 TJCOG 50th Anniversary Forum
The meeting with Knightdale’s Budget Committee (in support of Wendell’s request for assistance with the East Wake Senior Center facility maintenance costs) went well. It is the manager’s understanding that Knightdale is considering maintaining the $1,000 contribution that it has provided the last 5 years in its FY 2010-11Budget to assist Wendell with the senior center maintenance costs.
Governor Purdue opened the Triangle J Council of Governments’ 50th Anniversary Forum and spoke of the importance of regionalism. (She worked at a COG previously in her career.) Michael Rogers (a “Futurist”, author and former editor of Newsweek.com) gave his vision of the future. Among other things, he spoke about how our virtual worlds and “real worlds” will intertwine in the coming years. Dr. James Johnson (some Commissioners have heard him speak before) spoke about demographic change and the “greying” and “browning” of the U.S. The forum closed with discussion about regionalism – what issues needed to be addressed on a regional basis and how the TJCOG could assist / facilitate discussion and progress.
ITEM 56. ARRA PROJECT – # 5100-EB – BUFFALO AND THIRD STREETS
Turner Asphalt continued to work pouring concrete for the curb and gutter on Buffalo Road. They also poured concrete for some sidewalks this week. The heavy rains early in the week left the ground too wet for continued site prep work, so not much work was done later in the week. AT&T was on Third Street this week working on moving the phone lines from the old poles to the new poles.
ITEM 7. RBEG DOWNTOWN PROJECT BID OPENING
The bid opening for the USDA Rural Business Enterprise Grant (RBEG) project for downtown sidewalk improvements was held on Thursday, May 20, 2010. Four contractors submitted bids. The apparent low bidder for the project is Browe Construction in the amount of $125,530 (for Phase 1). (This is about $37,000 less than the engineer’s estimate, so it is a good bid for the town.)
ITEM 8. QUARTERLY TOWN E-NEWSLETTER PLANNED FOR KICK-OFF IN JUNE
Town Clerk Jonnie Driver is compiling information from departments for the first installment of a town e-newsletter. The first edition is planned for mid-June (after adoption of the budget). The newsletter will be placed on the town’s web site and will be distributed via email, as well. Please send email addresses of anyone who you would like to receive the e-newsletter to Town Clerk Jonnie Driver at
jdriver@townofwendell.com.

The Law Enforcement and Recreation Committee met on May 10th. Andrew Meyer, with Wake Co. 4-H, spoke about some no- to low-cost community programs (mentoring, activity and leadership programs) that could be brought to Wendell.
