ITEM 1. CHAMBER PLANNING CONCERT SERIES AT J. ASHLEY WALL TOWN SQUARE STARTS TONIGHT
The first of the Wendell Chamber of Commerce’s Spring Concert Series will be tonight – April 30th from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. “The 3rd Stage” will play Traditional, Bluegrass and Folk music at J. Ashley Wall Town Square.
The other events scheduled are as follows:
ITEM 2. WENDELL FARMERS’ MARKET OPENDS – SATURDAY, MAY 1ST
The Wendell Farmers’ Market starts this Saturday, May 1st at 9:00 a.m.
ITEM 3. DRUGS UNCOVERED EVENT
The Poe Center (
http://www.poehealth.org/) and the Town of Wendell / Wendell Police Department will host a “Drugs Uncovered” event on Wednesday, June 2
nd from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Wendell Community Center.
The event will involve an interactive session where current drug and alcohol trends in our community (as well as strategies for equipping our kids with the skills they need to continue to make healthy choices) are explored. Parents and anyone who works with youth are encouraged to attend. Participants will receive FREE materials including resources on raising drug-free and alcohol-free teens. The event (for adults only) is free and open to the public. Seating is limited. Spaces can be reserved by email (sent to
psmith@townofwendell.com), by phone (366-2266) or by registering at the community center.
The Poe Center is a nonprofit organization dedicated to positively impacting the lives of North Carolina youth through health education. Since opening in Raleigh in 1991, the Poe Center has educated over 715,000 participants from 73 counties using innovative teaching theaters, exhibits and offsite programs. By engaging in fun, highly interactive lessons, preschoolers through twelfth graders receive information that follows the NC DPI Healthful Living Standard Course of Study on a variety of health topics.
ITEM 4. UPDATE ON ADVISORY BOARD APPLICATIONS RECEIVED
The following applications have been received:
Planning Board – [one out-of-town and two in-town positions to fill] Sally Phipps (out-of town) and Jenny Melton (in-town); also, applications from Charles Cannon (in-town), Chris Smith (in-town) and James Parham (in-town) were held-over from January
Board of Adjustments – [one in-town position to fill] Mary-Kathryn Phillips
Recreation Advisory Board – [need to fill three in-town rep. positions , as well as youth rep., senior rep. positions] Dolly Cannon (in-town), John Lutz (in-town), Mary-Kathryn Phillips (in-town), Jenny Potter (in-town), Jason Shirley (youth rep.), Pam Sykes (senior rep.)
Tree Board – [one position possibly available] no applications received to date; however, there are currently six individuals on the Tree Board and only five are required by the Code of Ordinances, so the Board would not have to fill Joe Sparacia’s position.
The advisory board application deadline was today – Friday, April 30th.
ITEM 5. ARRA PROJECTS
# 5100-EA – Crosswalks on Third Street and Main Street – Work on the project has been completed.
# 5100-EB – Buffalo and Third Streets – No work was completed this week. Turner Asphalt plans to be on site next week to start the shoulder and sidewalk construction work.
ITEM 6. COMMITTEE NOTES
The following is an update of committee assignments, information and action:
UDO Ad Hoc Sub-Committee
The UDO Ad Hoc Sub-Committee continues to meet on Mondays at 9:15 a.m. in the Conference Room of the Wendell Community Center.
The sub-committee will hold its last scheduled meeting on Monday, May 3rd.
Downtown Sub-Committee
At the April 14, 2010 Board of Commissioners meeting, Commissioner Gray reported the committee decided to apply to the Main Street Program next summer rather than the Small Main Street Program this year. She said the Downtown Revitalization Group would be forming some by-laws, forming a 501(c)(3), seating a Board of Directors and getting started.
The Downtown Sub-Committee will meet on Monday, May 3rd at 7:00 p.m. in Activity Room “A” at the community center.
The Fiscal / H.R. Committee met on Tuesday, April 27th at 4:30 p.m. The meeting was recessed until Thursday, May 6th at 4:30 p.m. The recessed meeting will be held at the Community Center in Activity Room A.
The next committee meeting has been re-scheduled to Monday, May 10, 2010 at 4:00 p.m. Andrew Meyer, with Wake Co. 4-H, will talk at this meeting about some no- to low-cost community programs (mentoring, activity and leadership programs) that could be brought to Wendell.
The East Wake Gang Forum will have a special community meeting on May 27th at 6:00 p.m. at Wake Chapel Baptist Church in Zebulon.

ITEM 8. RBEG DOWNTOWN SIDEWALK PROJECT UPDATE
An advertisement for bids for the RBEG project was in the paper this past Sunday. A pre-bid meeting is scheduled for Thursday, May 6th, and bids are due by the bid opening on Thursday, May 20th. The award of bids for the project is scheduled for the May 24th Board of Commissioners meeting.
ITEM 9. OTHER
The opening day for baseball and softball will be Monday, May 3rd.
The Triangle East Fellowship of Churches will have its annual National Day of Prayer observation in the courtroom of the Wendell Town Hall on Thursday, May 6th at 12:00 noon. After the service, a bag lunch will be provided.
May is National Stroke Prevention Month. A Life Line Screening representative will be conducting a free informational session (for the public) on health and wellness on Thursday, May 13th at 9:00 a.m. at the Wendell Community Center. The risk factors and warning signs for strokes will be the focus of the informational session.
Wake County will have a Groundbreaking Ceremony for the Wake County Justice Center (200 S. Salisbury Street, Raleigh) on Monday, May 10th at 1:00 p.m.
The City of Raleigh will dedicate the Dempsey Benton Water Treatment Plant (2315 Benson Road, Garner) at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 12th.
Triangle J's 50th Anniversary Forum (with keynote speaker Michael Rogers, The Practical Futurist) will be on Thursday, May 20, 2010 from 8:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. at the Sheraton Imperial Hotel & Convention Center in Durham. For information, contact Marla Dorrel at mdorrel@tjcog.org or at 919-558-2706. The cost is $40 per person.
The Triangle J COG will also celebrate its 50th anniversary by hosting an anniversary reception on Friday, May 22, 2010 from 7:30 p.m. – 9:30 p.m. at the NC Museum of Art. The cost is $30 per person.
