Board of Commissioners Friday Update

ITEM 1. TOWN FACILITIES CLOSED MONDAY FOR MEMORIAL DAY
Town offices will be closed on Monday, May 31st for the Memorial Day holiday.
ITEM 2. GANG FORUM EVENT HELD THURSDAY, MAY 27TH
The East Wake Gang Forum held a special community meeting on May 27th at Wake Chapel Baptist Church outside of Knightdale. Law enforcement officers, public officials and other participants from the public attended the event. A former gang member spoke about his experiences. The East Wake Gang Forum is working to create a task force to develop an action plan to further create partnerships and to proactively address gang issues. Anyone interested in joining the task force should contact Darryl Blevins, Director of the Eastern Regional Center.
ITEM 3. SPECIAL CALLED MEETING – TUESDAY, JUNE 1ST AT 5:00 P.M.
A Special Called Meeting of the Board of Commissioners will be held on Tuesday, June 1st at 5:00 p.m.
ITEM 4. RECESSED PUBLIC WORKS, FACILITIES AND INFRASTRUCTURE COMMITTEE MEETING TO RESUME ON TUESDAY, JUNE 1ST AT 5:30 P.M.
The Public Works, Facilities and Infrastructure Committee met on Tuesday, May 25th. The committee met to discuss the CORPUD pro forma issues and Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) projects involved in the merger. The recessed committee meeting will resume on Tuesday, June 1st at 5:30 p.m.
ITEM 5. PLANNING BOARD SPECIAL CALLED MEETING – THURSDAY, JUNE 3RD AT 6:00 P.M. – FOR REVIEW OF UDO
The Planning Board will hold a special called meeting on Thursday, June 3rd at 6:00 p.m. in the courtroom to further discuss Chapters 1-6 of the UDO and any other concerns that may arise.
ITEM 6. UPDATE ON TOWN WEB SITE
As mentioned last week, the new town / economic development website is coming along well. Staff has been working this week with Wilmington Design Company and Holland Consulting on some of the issues with tweaking the design and beginning to learn how to administer the site. As aforementioned, we will need to work with our consultants to finish the economic development content (information about available properties, for example). Staff expects to be able to provide a link to the Board of Commissioners next week in order to review the draft web site.
ITEM 7. MEETINGS THE MANAGER ATTENDED THIS WEEK

Tues. 5/25 Triangle J COG Managers Meeting

The main item at the TJCOG Managers Meeting involved a roundtable discussion on budget items. Based on discussions, most jurisdictions are planning to hold steady on the tax rate [with the possible exception of Knightdale, Durham (city) and Durham County]. Many jurisdictions of plan adjustments to water and sewer rates.
ITEM 8. ARRA PROJECT – # 5100-EB – BUFFALO AND THIRD STREETS
AT&T removed the old utility poles on Third Street this week. Turner Asphalt removed the old sidewalk on Third Street. No site prep work or concrete pouring took place on Buffalo Street, due to the continued rain this week.
ITEM 9. MEETINGS THE MANAGER PLANS TO ATTEND NEXT WEEK
No significant meetings are scheduled.
ITEM 10. COMMITTEE NOTES
The following is an update of committee assignments, information and action:

The Public Works Committee met on Tuesday, May 25th. The committee began discussing the capital projects involved with the CORPUD pro forma. The meeting was recessed until 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 1st.
UDO Ad Hoc Sub-Committee
-
The first six chapters of the UDO was presented to the Board of Commissioners on May 24th. Chapters 7-19 will be presented to the Board on June 14th.

The UDO Committee will reconvene on Thursday, June 24th at 7:00 p.m. in the Wendell Community Center. This meeting will be after the scheduled vote on the UDO by the Planning Board and before the public hearing at the Monday, June 28, 2010 Board of Commissioners meeting. The Board of Commissioners is encouraged to attend this meeting so the elected officials and UDO Committee members will have an opportunity to discuss comments and recommendations being forwarded from the Planning Board.

A public hearing on the UDO is scheduled for the June 28th Board of Commissioners meeting.

The Law Enforcement and Recreation Committee met on May 10th.

The next Law Enforcement and Recreation Committee meeting will be held on Monday, June 14, 2010 at 5:00 p.m. in the conference room of the Wendell Courtroom.

The Appearance Committee met on May 4th.

At the May 24, 2010 Board of Commissioners meeting, Commissioner Gray stated a joint Downtown Group / Appearance Committee meeting would be held in the near future. Commissioner Gray also said at this meeting, the two groups would discuss the type of landscaping for the USDA RBEG downtown sidewalk / improvements project.

The downtown clock was not working for a few days, and the problem has been corrected.

The Chamber’s May 21
st concert (featuring the NC Revelers Orchestra) was taped by EWTV and
is playing Tuesdays and Saturdays (after Wendell Board of Commissioners Meeting) on the PEG channel. The concert is also available online at http://ewtv.org.

JRW & Associates (the town’s insurance broker) held the annual insurance enrollment meeting with the town employees on Wednesday. The employees filled-out their personal enrollment forms for the conversion to Blue Cross / Blue Shield coverage (effective July 1st).

The Poe Center (
http://www.poehealth.org/) and the Town of Wendell / Wendell Police Department will host a “Drugs Uncovered” event on Wednesday, June 2
nd from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Wendell Community Center. The event will involve an interactive session where current drug and alcohol trends in our community (as well as strategies for equipping our kids with the skills they need to continue to make healthy choices) are explored. Parents and anyone who works with youth are encouraged to attend. The event (for adults only) is free and open to the public. Seating is limited. Spaces can be reserved by email (sent to
psmith@townofwendell.com), by phone (366-2266) or by registering at the community center.
