Re.: Wake County ABC Grant
The Town of Wendell has received a grant from the Wake County Alcoholic Control Board. A letter from Wake ABC was received on March 1, 2010 awarding $75,000.00 in support of two programs for Wendell. The grant is effective immediately and does not require a cash match from the town.
The application process began in January 2010, during which time the Town Board of Commissioners unanimously supported a resolution for the application for grant funds. County Commissioner Joe Bryant and Sheriff Donnie Harrison provided letters of support for the application.
Grant funds will be utilized to establish a one-week summer day camp (date to be announced) where 4th and 5th graders will be exposed to various drug and alcohol awareness seminars, the Gang Resistance Education and Training (GREAT) program, and general police duties including traffic safety issues. The Wendell Police Department will partner with Wendell Parks and Recreation to add sports and physical activities to keep the camp fun and interesting. Mothers against Drunk Driving, Students Against Destructive Decisions and Wake County Health and Human Services have all agreed to assist with the camp in various ways. Our camp will be titled, Camp “Choices”, based on the numerous, challenging choices our youth face every day. The week-long day camp will be free to participants, and daily lunch will be provided.
The grant will also be used to implement a program that will allow citizens the opportunity to experience the impaired senses and abilities encountered when driving under the influence of alcohol. Participants will operate a golf cart under trained supervision while wearing “Fatal Vision” goggles that simulate intoxication. This program will be made available at various community events across Eastern Wake County, area schools and upon request (with large groups).
More information will be made available as plans for the two programs are finalized over the next couple of months.
“We believe this funding will provide vital resources to youth in Eastern Wake County. It is exciting to have the funding to bring police and children together in a positive way – both will benefit.”
