Friday Update

Board of Commissioners Friday Update

Wednesday, November 25, 2009
Happy Thanksgiving!

ITEM 1. TOWN FACILITIES CLOSED FOR THANKSGIVING

Town facilities will be closed on Thursday, November 26th and Friday, November 27th for the Thanksgiving holiday.
ITEM 2. NEW COMMISSIONER ORIENTATION PLANNED FOR FRIDAY, DECEMBER 4TH AT 9:00 A.M.
An orientation session for the new Commissioners is scheduled for Friday, December 4th at 9:00 a.m. at the Wendell Community Center.  The session should last about 2 – 2 ½ hours.
ITEM 3. PLANS FOR RECEPTION AFTER SWEARING-IN AT THE DECEMBER 14TH BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS MEETING
As it historically has occurred, the December 14th meeting is scheduled to open with the existing Board of Commissioners.  The current Board will approve the minutes from the November 23rd meeting, and then the meeting will proceed with the swearing-in.  District Court Judge James Fullwood is tentatively scheduled to administer the Oaths of Office.  A reception honoring the new Commissioners and the outgoing Commissioners is being planned in conjunction with the Chamber of Commerce.
ITEM 4. BIDS RECEIVED FOR ARRA SIDEWALK PROJECT ON THIRD AND BUFFALO STREETS
13 bids were received Tuesday, November 24th for the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) sidewalk project on Third and Buffalo Streets. The apparent low bid of $283,260.50 was received from Turner Asphalt. Hobbs & Upchurch is currently working on verifying the numbers in the bids. The approval of the bids and a resolution authorizing the Mayor to sign a contract for this project will be on the December 14th Town Board meeting agenda. The town has been awarded a grant of $470,000 for the project. The remaining funds will pay for engineering services, the moving of utility lines and other project-related costs.
ITEM 5. ADDITIONAL ITEM FOR DECEMBER 14TH AGENDA
Related to the ARRA project on Third and Buffalo Streets, at the December 14th Board of Commissioners meeting, the town staff will be requesting approval of a contract with Progress Energy for the moving of approximately eight (8) utility poles.
Once project plans were approved by the NC Department of Transportation (DOT), the plans were forwarded to Progress Energy for review. Because of the alignment of the sidewalk along West Third Street, it was determined by Progress Energy that the poles would need to be moved to constrict the sidewalk. The cost of the pole relocation would be covered through the ARRA funds.
