We welcome these new employees.
ITEM 6. GANG OFFFICER AT WORK
Officer Larry Franklin, Wendell’s Gang Officer, is now teaching the Gang Resistance Education and Training (GREAT) program to all fourth and fifth graders at Wendell Elementary. As you are aware, Officer Franklin’s position is funded by the town’s Governor’s Crime Commission grant. The program will also expand to Lake Myra Elementary in January. Several hundred children will be exposed to this training.
The G.R.E.A.T. elementary curriculum was designed for fourth and fifth grade students. Children who have aggressive behavior in the elementary school years are more likely to display anti-social and violent behavior as adolescents and young adults. By providing prevention programs to students in elementary and middle school, it is believed that such programs have a better chance of affecting the developmental course of the problem behavior.
The G.R.E.A.T. elementary curriculum consists of six 30- to 45-minute lessons designed to be taught in sequence. Each lesson is accompanied by a parent letter that the student takes home explaining the lesson and encouraging parent/student interaction. Children are given instruction in a variety of areas as demonstrated in the lesson outline. The outline for the program is as follows:
-
G.R.E.A.T. Beginnings
-
To Do or Not to Do
-
Loud and Clear
-
Staying Cool When the Heat Is On
-
We're All in This Together
-
G.R.E.A.T. Days Ahead
