WakeUp Wake County Update

Remember the drought?  Will it occur again next year?

We don't know, but we can be prepared for it.  That's why the Raleigh City Council has made recommendations for water conservation.  Implementing a tiered water rate system was supposed to begin this December -- after 18 months of planning.  But City officials announced this week that they will beDELAYED until next July.  Tiered rates means the more water you use, the more you pay.  The goal is to discourage lawn watering with drinking water because lawn irrigation uses enormous amounts of our water.

Ask the Raleigh City Council and Mayor Meeker to get this conservation effort moving sooner!
The problem with the delay is that lawn irrigation begins in the spring, so IF tiered rates begin in July, they will have little impact next year.  Tiered rates are a critical conservation step that the public asked for.  WakeUP has expressed our disappointment with this delay to city officials and the press.  Also, water rates were supposed to be increased at the same time as the tiered rates were to be implemented, so that you can conserve water without paying more.  Yet the city council voted 5-3 to increase water rates, despite the delay.***  But their vote included asking city staff to report back a plan to move faster with tiered rates.  Click here for Raleigh City Council email addresses.

Demand for water in Raleigh and eastern Wake County will exceed supply by 2040 -- We must take action today to extend water capacity for tomorrow.  We need to plan for growth.  Bottom line.

*** Mayor Meeker and Councilors Mary Ann Baldwin, Philip Isley, Nancy McFarlane and James West voted for the increase in water rates.  Councilors Thomas Crowder, Rodger Koopman and Russ Stephenson voted against the increase.

Note: I saw on TV this morning that 2009 might be the driest year on record if we don't get considerably more rain by the end of the year.
