Board of Commissioners Friday Update

ITEM 1. UPDATE ON EXPRESS BUS SERVICE
The inaugural week of the express bus service has gone well. Approximately ten cars have been consistently parked in the Wendell parking lot. A temporary bus shelter was installed this week. Additional lighting should be installed soon, and town staff is working on getting a marquee sign installed for the lot.
ITEM 2. EXPRESS BUS SERVICE KICKOFF EVENT – TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 10TH AT 10:00 A.M.
A ZWX Express Bus Service official launch event is scheduled for Tuesday, November 10th at 10:00 a.m. in Wendell. The event will be held at the historic Post Office across the street from the bus parking lot. There will be a ceremony, refreshments, and a bus ride to Zebulon and back.
ITEM 3. FREE FARE PERIOD FOR THE ZWX EXPRESS BUS SERVICE FROM OCTOBER 26TH – NOVEMBER 30TH
The Zebulon/Wendell-Raleigh Express will run at peak commute times: Monday-Friday 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. and Monday-Friday 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. After the initial fare free period, the fare for the route is $2.50 per one-way trip or $5.00 per round-trip. There will be an introductory FARE FREE period from October 26th through November 30th.

ITEM 4. UPDATE ON GOVERNOR’S HIGHWAY SAFETY PROGRAM GRANT
The Police Department has been ordering equipment and vehicles supplied through the Governor’s Highway Safety Program (GHSP) for the two GHSP grant positions. Officers Jermaine Thomas and Henry Gibbs will be filling these two grant positions, and two additional officers will be hired to fill the vacancies caused through the GHSP moves. Conditional offers have been extended to fill the two vacancies.

ITEM 6. OTHER

A copy of the 2008-09 Audit for the Wendell Fire Department has been received by the town. A copy of the audit can be reviewed in the office of Town Clerk Jonnie Driver.

The 2009 Men's Slow-pitch Polar Bear Softball Tournament (wood bats only) will be held November 14-15, 2009. The entry fee is $200 per team. Interested teaks can contact Kelley Connolly at 366-2266 for more information.

The Town of Wendell (in conjunction with the Wendell Historical Society) will hold a meeting on November 19th at 6:00 p.m. to inform property owners within the town’s two national register historic districts about the tax benefits available. During this meeting, there will be two short presentations: one on tax credits for historic renovation work and the other on the Secretary of the Interior’s standards for renovation.
