Board of Commissioners Friday Update

October 9, 2009

ITEM 1. STREETSWEEPER RECEIVED
The town’s new streetsweeper was received today. A photo of the streetsweeper is attached. The Public Works staff received training on the operation and maintenance of the equipment today, as well.
ITEM 2. STATUS OF 2008-09 AUDIT
The auditor was in town hall on Monday and has completed most of the field work involved in the town’s 2008-09 Audit. The town should receive a draft audit report by the end of this month. Usually, an audit presentation is given to the Board of Commissioners in November.
ITEM 3. PROGRESS ON EXPRESS BUS SERVICE PARKING LOT
Moffett Construction (which handled CORPUD’s water line project) vacated the property at the corner of Oakwood and Fourth Streets this week. The company was using the site during the project to store equipment and supplies. This same property is the site for the town’s parking lot for the Zebulon/Wendell-Raleigh Express (ZWX) route.
Preparation for the parking lot also started this week. The addition of gravel for the parking lot started on Thursday, and the concrete for the sidewalk, base for the bus stop shelter and driveway cut has been poured. The bus stop shelter and signs still have to be installed.
The Zebulon/Wendell-Raleigh Express (ZWX) route is scheduled to begin on Monday, October 26th. Please encourage anyone interested in the service to sign up for Triangle Transit’s e-mail rider alerts.  They can sign-up at http://triangletransit.org/contact/alerts/
ITEM 4. LAST UDO REVIEW MEETING – THURSDAY, OCTOBER 15TH
The last of four UDO review meetings will take place on Thursday, October 15th at 6:00 p.m. in the Wendell Courtroom. The discussion of this last meeting will center on Chapters 14-19. Please remember that if you have questions or comments about the wording in the UDO, you do not have to wait until the meetings to communicate your questions / comments. Feel free to email comments and questions to the Planning staff.
ITEM 5. LAKE GLAD SEWER PROJECT REPORT
The Lake Glad Road Sewer Main Rehabilitation Project is a merger project that involves the replacement or rehabilitation of 2,500 linear feet of 16-inch gravity line along Lake Glad Road. This section of sewer line serves as the final section of the town’s gravity sewer system discharging to the Lake Glad Road Pretreatment Facility.
On Monday October 12th, R.D. Braswell Construction will be closing the entrance of Jones Landing Subdivision located at the intersection of W. Haywood & Landing Place in order to install a sanitary sewer main for the City of Raleigh as part of the Lake Glad Sewer Improvement Project.  Alternate entrances into the subdivision include one located at intersection of West 1st Street and Meadow Lane as well as one located at intersection of Landing View Drive & South Buffalo Road.  It is anticipated this work may last at least two weeks.
ITEM 6. WATER TANK / TEMPORARY CELL PHONE ANTENNA IN PARK
The water tank at Thompson Field has been painted. The vendor who will be painting “Wendell” on the tank is scheduled to start in the near future. The transition of the cell phone antenna (back to the tower) started this week. The removal of the temporary cell phone antenna from Wendell Park should happen soon. (The agreement for the temporary antenna expires October 15th.)
ITEM 7. MONTHLY SUBDIVISION STATUS REPORT
The monthly subdivision status report is attached to the Friday Memo.

ITEM 8. WENDELL IS REPRESENTED IN THE PARADE OF HOMES
The Wake County Parade of Homes continues this weekend (Oct. 9-11) and next weekend (Oct. 16-18). Wendell is represented by two homes – one in Edgemont Landing and one in the Woods of Blair Hills. For more information, check-out http://www.hbawake.com/.
ITEM 9. DROUGHT / FALLS LAKE STATUS
Wake County remains in the “Abnormally Dry” category, along with 34 other NC counties. 13 counties remain in the “Moderate Drought” category. The latest drought advisory map is available online at http://www.ncdrought.org/.
The Falls Lake water level (as of Thursday) was 248.18 MSL, which is about 3.32 feet below the level of the lake when the water supply pool is full (251.5 feet MSL). Information about the Falls Lake water level is available online at http://epec.saw.usace.army.mil/neuse.htm.
ITEM 10. OTHER

  1. Video from the Harvest Festival is playing on EWTV on Tuesday & Saturday about 8:15 p.m. (after the Wendell Board meeting). The video is also available online at www.ewtv.org.

  2. Registration for Youth Basketball will end next week. The registration deadline is Thursday, October 14, 2009. Basketball registration forms are available at the Wendell Community Center.

  3. The Grand Opening of the Zebulon Community Center (the former National Guard Armory) will be at 9:00 a.m. on Friday, October 16th.

  4. Kids Voting and the NC Museum of History are co-sponsoring an Educational Forum for Middle and High School Students on Saturday, October 17th. The groups are asking each town to set-up an information table in the lobby of the museum from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. that day. The town staff has been working with the Chamber to prepare for the event and will participate in the program.

  5. Rep. Darren Jackson will hold a town hall meeting at the Zebulon Municipal Complex on Thursday, October 29, 2009 at 7:00 p.m.  The purpose of this town hall meeting is to answer questions and hear constituent concerns.

  6. The Town of Wendell (in conjunction with the Wendell Historical Society) will hold a meeting on November 19th at 6:00 p.m. to inform property owners within the town’s two national register historic districts about the tax benefits available.  During this meeting, there will be two short presentations: one on tax credits for historic renovation work and the other on the Secretary of the Interior’s standards for renovation.
