Friday Update

Board of Commissioners Friday Update

Friday, July 3, 2009

ITEM 1. TOWN FACILITIES CLOSED – FRIDAY, JULY 3RD

Town facilities will be closed on Friday, July 3rd for the July 4th holiday.

ITEM 2. JULY 4TH EVENT – SPONSORED BY THE WENDELL HISTORICAL SOCIETY

The Wendell Historical Society (assisted this year by the Chamber of Commerce, the Hoe and Hope Garden Club, the Town of Wendell and the Wendell Police Department) will hold its July 4th celebration on the afternoon of the 4th. The parade will start at 3:00 p.m. at the corner of Depot and Main Streets and will proceed to the J. Ashley Wall Town Square. Kids of all ages are encouraged to dress-up and/or decorate their bikes, wagons and other non-motorized vehicles and participate in the parade. Free hot dogs, lemonade and watermelon will be served in the town square after the parade.

A flyer promoting the event is at the end of the Friday Memo.

ITEM 3. REP. DARREN JACKSON TO HOLD A TOWN HALL MEETING IN WENDELL ON TUESDAY, JULY 28TH AT 7:00 P.M.

Rep. Darren Jackson has scheduled a town hall meeting in the Wendell Courtroom on Tuesday, July 28th at 7:00 p.m. Rep. Jackson held a similar event in Knightdale in June. At that meeting, he asked for public input about the State budget and other legislative issues.

ITEM 4. “OUT WITH THE OLD AND IN WITH THE NEW”

The end of the 2008-09 fiscal year was concluded on Tuesday, June 30th. The Finance Department was busy closing-out the year that day. The Finance Department also had additional duties on Wednesday, July 1st to prepare for the 2009-10 fiscal year, so Wednesday was like New Year’s Day for the town. The auditor has already begun preliminary work on the FY 2008-09 audit.

ITEM 5. EAST WAKE TV NOW ON AT&T U-VERSE VIDEO PROGRAMMING

As you are aware, East Wake TV has been working with AT&T (which is now offering an alternative to satellite or cable service) to get East Wake TV shown as a PEG (Public, Education and Governmental) channel in its U-Verse video programming. As of June 29th, East Wake TV should be broadcast on AT&T. EWTV programming will be delivered to U-verse subscribers via Channel 99. There will be a drop-down menu with multiple options. Each community (Knightdale, Wendell, Zebulon and Rolesville) will be listed separately but when these options are selected, the viewers will all be directed to the same programming at East Wake TV.

The manager does not know how many, if any, AT&T video customers there are in Wendell, but it is good to know that

ITEM 6. LEGISLATIVE UPDATE

  1. The House Finance Committee late Wednesday gave a favorable report to HB 524 – Annexation – Omnibus Changes that included a last-minute amendment to allow for a referendum of the municipality and the proposed annexation area. The annexation vote would only take place after 15 percent of the registered voters in town and in the proposed annexed areas petitioned for a vote. The bill now goes to the House floor.

  2. House and Senate budget negotiations continue to move forward, with a continuing resolution adopted to keep state government operating through July 15. There is continuing disagreement between the two chambers over how to raise approximately $1B in new revenue. One item of significant concern is the apparent agreement to eliminate the privilege license tax, which raises approximately $50M for municipalities statewide.

  3. The Wendell ETJ extension authorization (House Bill 743) unanimously passed the Senate Finance Committee on Tuesday, June 30th. Speaker Blue has agreed to handle the bill on the Senate floor, which should happen soon.

ITEM 7. DROUGHT UPDATE

As I am sure everyone is keenly aware, the lack of recent rain is starting to have an effect. Everything east of Wake County is now in the “Abnormally Dry” category. The latest Drought Advisory Map is available at http://www.ncdrought.org/.

ITEM 8. RECREATION NEWS

  1. The Wendell Parks and Recreation Department will host the 8 and Under, 10 and Under and 12 and Under Girl’s Softball District Tournaments at Carver Field and the Doug Proctor Field from July 6th to about July 12th.

  2. Tiger Martial Arts of Knightdale will host The Korean Tigers, a professional Tae Kwon Do demonstration team from Korea, at the Wendell Community Center on July 18th at 6:00 p.m.

ITEM 9. OTHER

  1. The town’s facilities have been switched to Time Warner fiber optic data. The phone services are scheduled to be switched in the near future.

  2. The town’s paving contractor was scheduled to start some patching work this week.

  3. The NC League of Municipalities will hold its annual conference in Greenville October 25-27.

  4. The Marketing Focus Group will meet with Holland Consulting Planners at the Wendell Community Center on Thursday, July 30th from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m.

  5. The Wendell Police Department (in partnership with the Wendell Fire Department and Eastern Wake Emergency Medical Services) will hold its inaugural Public Safety Day on Saturday, August 22nd from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. in the rear parking lot of Hephzibah Baptist Church.
