WakeUp Wake County Update

Real progress is being made for protecting the drinking water of Wake County!
In the past week...

The Jordan Lake bill was sent to Governor Perdue for her signature, following approval by both the NC House of Representatives and Senate. After 12 long years of negotiations, this legislation permits actions to begin for protecting this important, but polluted, drinking water reservoir. "This new law will put all the sources of pollution onto a path to cleaning up Jordan Lake," commented Grady McCallie, with the NC Conservation Network, who worked hard on the legislation.

Also, progress on Falls Lake: Wake Senator Josh Stein hosted a key meeting of Triangle legislators and municipal leaders, including Wake Rep. Jennifer Weiss and Raleigh Mayor Charles Meeker. These key leaders from Wake, Durham, Orange and Granville Counties, are developing steps to get Falls Lake rules and development practices in place sooner to clean up this criticial water source. We expect legislative action soon! Falls Lake provides drinking water to almost half a million people in Wake County.

WakeUP Wake County was in the press on Falls Lake! WakeUP spoke out for Falls Lake on WRAL. Click here to view. And WakeUP's Karen Rindge, co-authored a pubished op-ed, "Let's not wait to save Fall Lake" with the Upper Neuse Riverkeeper, Alissa Bierma. Click here to read.

Meanwhile, appreciate your cool water during this hot summer!
