Board of Commissioners Friday Update

ITEM 1. WORK SESSION PLANNED FOR 10:00 A.M. ON FRIDAY, MAY 1ST
As a follow-up to the Budget Work Session held on Tuesday, April 14th, a work session has been scheduled for 10:00 a.m. on Friday, May 1st. Since court is held that day, the work session will be held in Activity Room B at the Community Center. During the work session, the board will discuss potential financial goals for the town, as well as any issues involving the draft budget.
ITEM 2. EDUCATION FORUM SPONSORED BY CARY – RSVP FOR MAY 11TH EVENT DUE BY APRIL 30TH
The Cary Town Council is hosting an interactive forum on education entitled the “Climate for Student Success” on Monday, May 11, 2009 from 8:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. in the Cary Town Council Chambers at 316 North Academy Street in Cary. The forum is an opportunity for local leaders to come together to discuss how municipalities can support the Wake County Public School System. Elain McEwan, the best-selling author of 10 Traits of Highly Effective Schools, will be the keynote speaker. To register for the event, click on http://www.townofcary.net/cssf/cssf.php.
ITEM 3. CHAMBER TO MOVE FORWARD WITH FARMERS’ MARKET
Marjorie Lynch has stated that the Farmers’ Market Committee has agreed to move forward with their plans to organize a Farmers’ Market for Wendell. The committee homes to start the Wendell Farmers’ Market on Saturday, May 9th (from 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m.).
ITEM 4. LAND USE TRAINING OPPORTUNITY – TUESDAY, MAY 12TH
As previously communicated with the board, the Town of Zebulon has arranged for David Owens, with the UNC School of Government, to provide training to the Board of Adjustment and Planning Board Members of the Towns of Zebulon and Wendell. The training has been scheduled for Tuesday, May 12th at 6:30 p.m. in Zebulon’s town board chamber at the new Zebulon Town Hall. The mayors and commissioners of the two towns are also invited to attend this training.
Mr. Owens is a lawyer and has been with the School of Government for many years. He has written several books on zoning, including Introduction to Zoning, which Wendell has purchased for its BOA and Planning Board members.

ITEM 5. HAZARD MITIGATION PLAN UPDATE
The Mitigation Plan for the Town of Wendell was received by the reviewing agency in February, and the review is currently underway. The review of the plan has been delayed, but staff hopes to receive comments on the plan in May.
ITEM 6. OTHER
A. Congratulations to Finance Officer Butch Kay, who graduated from the School of Government Municipal Administration Course this week. Butch has been involved in this class since September.
B. CORPUD is using a lot at the corner of East Fourth Street and North Oakwood Avenue as a temporary staging area for utility projects in Wendell.
C. MAY 3RD CONCERT – The Wendell Recreation Department will host an Outdoor Concert at the J. Ashley Wall Town Square on Sunday May 3, 2009 from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. The Dave Youngman Band will play Jazz, Blues and Swing. The rain date is May 17, 2009.
D. MARK CARVER DAY / OPENING DAY ON MAY 4TH – Opening Day for baseball and softball will be on Monday, May 4th. This also will be “Mark Carver Day” in the Town of Wendell. The first pitch for the will be at 5:45.
E. The NC League of Municipalities’ Town Hall Day will be on Wednesday, May 6th from 9:30 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. Mayor Broadwell, Commissioner Connolly and Manager Bone plan to attend.
F. Wendell town facilities will be closed on Monday, May 25th for Memorial Day. The Board of Commissioners meeting regularly-scheduled for Monday, May 25th instead will be held on Tuesday, May 26th at 7:00 p.m.
