Board of Commissioners Friday Update

ITEM 1. WORK SESSION PLANNED FOR 10:00 A.M. ON FRIDAY, MAY 1^ST

As a follow-up to the Budget Work Session held on Tuesday, May 14^th, a work session has been scheduled for 10:00 a.m. on Friday, May 1^st. Since court is held that day, the work session will be held in Activity Room B at the Community Center. During the work session, the board will discuss potential financial goals for the town, as well as any issues involving the draft budget.

ITEM 2. LAND USE TRAINING OPPORTUNITY – TUESDAY, MAY 12^TH

As previously communicated with the board, the Town of Zebulon has arranged for David Owens, with the UNC School of Government, to provide training to the Board of Adjustment and Planning Board Members of the Towns of Zebulon and Wendell. The training has been scheduled for Tuesday, May 12^th at 6:30 p.m. in Zebulon’s town board chamber at the new Zebulon Town Hall. The mayors and commissioners of the two towns are also invited to attend this training.

Mr. Owens is a lawyer and has been with the School of Government for many years. He has written several books on zoning, including Introduction to Zoning, which Wendell has purchased for its BOA and Planning Board members.

ITEM 3. PLANNING BOARD MEETING – MONDAY, APRIL 20^TH

The Wendell Planning Board will have its regular meeting on Monday, April 20^th at 7:00 p.m. The Planning Board meeting agenda is at the bottom of this update.

ITEM 4. JOHN DEERE GRAND OPENING – FRIDAY, APRIL 24^th AT 10:00 A.M.

The grand opening and ribbon cutting for Quality Equipment / John Deere (901 Three Sisters Road) will be on Friday, April 24^th at 10:00 a.m.

ITEM 5. NCLM TOWN HALL DAY – WEDNESDAY, MAY 6^TH

The NC League of Municipalities’ Town Hall Day will be on Wednesday, May 6^th from 9:30 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. Mayor Broadwell, Commissioner Connolly and Manager Bone plan to attend. This will be a critical opportunity for us officials to advocate on behalf of our residents. The annual legislative rally is only days before the “crossover” deadline, which means most bills must pass either the House or Senate to remain eligible for consideration. Also, several municipal issues, especially annexation, are expected to be under major legislative scrutiny in early May.

ITEM 6. UPDATE ON HB 148 – CONGESTION RELIEF / INTERMODAL TRANSPORTION FUND BILL

As you are aware, HB 148 would give transportation authorities the power, with voter approval, to levy a one-half cent local sales tax to be used only for public transportation systems. The bill received a favorable report from the House Transportation and House Finance Committees and is to be voted on by the full House next week.

ITEM 7. RECREATION DEPARTMENT NEWS

A. MARK CARVER DAY / OPENING DAY – Opening Day for baseball and softball will be on Monday, May 4^th. This also will be “Mark Carver Day” in the Town of Wendell. The first pitch for the will be at 5:45.

B. T-ball will start on Saturday, May 2^nd.

C. MAY 3^RD CONCERT – The Wendell Recreation Department will host an Outdoor Concert at the J. Ashley Wall Town Square on Sunday May 3, 2009 from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. The Dave Youngman Band will play Jazz, Blues and Swing. The rain date is May 17, 2009.

D. The Summer Youth Tennis Camp will run the week of June 22-26.

E. There also will be a Summer Art Camp with Mrs. Wendy York at the Community Center during the week of June 22-26.

ITEM 8. OTHER

A. The Poole Road / Richardson Road intersection officially opened to traffic on Thursday, April 16^th.

B. Wendell town facilities will be closed on Monday, May 25^th for Memorial Day. The regularly-scheduled meeting on Monday, May 25^th will be held on Tuesday, May 26^th at 7:00 p.m.

• Individuals making public comments are expected to be courteous to the Planning Board.
