Board of Commissioners Friday UpdateMarch 13, 2009
ITEM 1. BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS WORK SESSION ABOUT ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT WITH HOLLAND CONSULTING – FRIDAY, MARCH 27TH FROM 1:00 TO 4:00 P.M.The Board of Commissioners has a work session on Friday, March 27th from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. with Holland Consulting to give input and establish economic development priorities and goals, as the town begins its relationship with the firm as its economic development consultants. The meeting will take place at the Wendell Community Center.
ITEM 2. FIRST INFORMATIONAL MEETINGS ABOUT THE DRAFT WENDELL PARK MASTER PLAN HELD ON THURSDAY, MARCH 12TH; SECOND MEETING TO BE HELD ON THURSDAY, MARCH 26THThe first informational meetings about the draft Wendell Park Master Plan was held on Thursday, March 12th. Surveys are also being gathered about the public’s desires for recreational facilities down the road. The survey results will be a necessary if the town pursues a Parks and Recreation Trust Fund (PARTF) grant down the road. The surveys are available at the town hall and the community and are also
online here.
The next Park Master Plan informational meeting will be held on Thursday March 26th from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. As with the first meeting, the March 26th meeting will be a “floating meeting” – citizens can come anytime during that period to see the draft master plan and provide some feedback about the plan.
Consideration of the park master plan is scheduled for the April 13th Board of Commissioners meeting.
ITEM 3. DROUGHT STATUSYou may have seen recent reports about how 2009 has started-off with below average rainfall. Some related articles include:

The latest drought management map is available at
http://www.ncdrought.org/. The map shows that a large swath of the coastal plain is now experiencing moderate drought. Drought, while not present in this area, could return without adequate rainfall. 56 counties in the eastern part of the state now fall into the “Abnormally Dry” category. 39 counties in western NC fall under the “Moderate Drought” or “Severe Drought” categories.
ITEM 4. CONGESTION RELIEF/INTERMODAL TRANSPORT FUND BILL MOVES FORWARDThe House Transportation Committee endorsed legislation Wednesday that would let Triangle voters increase the local sales tax to pay for buses and rail transit. ITEM 5. OTHER:Construction resumed this week on the Richardson Road / Poole Road intersection.
Time Warner Cable began installing the fiber optic cable to the community center this week.
The town is now accepting applications for advisory boards. Applications are available online at
www.townofwendell.com or at Town Hall at 15 E. Fourth Street. The deadline for applications will be April 3, 2009.
The Planning Board will meet on Monday, March 16th. A revised Parkview PUD document will be on the agenda.
The UDO Committee tentatively plans to meet on Monday, March 30th at 6:00 p.m.
The Town of Zebulon will have an open house for its new town hall on Saturday, March 14th from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m.
The town is currently seeking proposals from qualified insurance brokers interested in providing health related benefit services to the town. Proposals must be received by 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 17th.
The Grand Opening of
El Cerro Mexican Grill (18 W. Third Street) will be on Saturday, March 21st. There will be live music and specials.
The Wendell Police Department will be involved in a Charity Softball Tournament on March 28, 2009 Zebulon Community Park. All money donated and raised will be given to the 200 Club of Wake County, an organization dedicated to providing immediate financial help for the spouse and children of police officers, sheriff deputies, firemen, EMS squad members and NCSHP serving in Wake County who lose their life in the line of duty.
