Friday Update

Board of Commissioners Friday Update

January 23, 2009

(Distributed on Saturday, January 24th)

ITEM 1. CHAMBER OF COMMERCE “CHARMS OF WENDELL” ART EXHIBIT

The opening reception of the Wendell Chamber of Commerce’s “Charms of Wendell” art exhibit was on Friday, January 23rd. The exhibit will be on display at the Women’s Club through Sunday, January 25th. Winning pieces will be displayed in the Chamber office throughout the month of February. The exhibit consists of original paintings / drawings by local artists depicting the people, landscapes, town views, historical buildings and interesting things that make Wendell such a wonderful place to live.

The opening reception was a huge hit. The Women’s Club was full, and everyone seemed to have a great time.

If you did not attend the opening reception, stop by the Women’s Club on Sunday to see all of the wonderful art on display.

ITEM 2. WELCOME TO NEW BUSINESSES IN TOWN

El Cerro Mexican Restaurant is expected to open soon in the former Meeting Place Restaurant. The restaurant has received its ABC license, and it provided some of the food for the “Charms of Wendell” art exhibit on Friday.

The Kila Company has relocated from Zebulon to downtown Wendell and is now open. The store has a mix of clothes, accessories, jewelry, and gifts. It is located up the street from Kannon’s. The Grand Opening for this location will be at 4:30 p.m. on January 30th at 28 North Main Street. Additionally, a “Business After Hours” event is scheduled for 5:30-7:30 p.m. that same evening.

Liberty Tax Service had its ribbon-cutting ceremony on January 19th. It is located near Subway on Wendell Boulevard.

ITEM 3. JOINT LEGISLATIVE STUDY COMMISSION ON MUNICIPAL ANNEXATION MEETING

As previously shared, Mayor Broadwell and I attended the meeting of the Joint Study Commission on Municipal Annexation met on Thursday, January 22nd.  The commission voted on a variety of policy proposals that will return to staff for bill drafting.  Two of the major proposals the commission endorsed were:

A proposal to enact a moratorium on city-initiated annexation until current annexation laws are revised (both the House and Senate would have to vote on this, as with all other proposals).

Endorsement of a proposal to require a positive vote of the citizens in the proposed areas for annexation in order for the annexation to be finalized.

Please talk to Senator Vernon Malone and newly-selected Rep. Darren Jackson to make sure we have their support on this issue.

ITEM 4. NC LEAGUE OF MUNICIPALITIES REGIONAL LEGISLATIVE UPDATE –

The NC League of Municipalities has held 10 regional legislative updates around the state during January. Manager Bone attended the January 21st meeting in Wilson meeting. In addition to talking about the Joint Legislative Study Commission on annexation, other items discussed included:

The state’s budget shortfall for 2008-09, which could be as high as $2 billion;

The state’s budget gap for 2009-10, which is expected to be $3.2 billion;

The proposed federal economic stimulus package; and

Probable battles at both the state and federal levels concerning mandated collective bargaining for public safety employees.

ITEM 5. BOARD OF ADJUSTMENT MEETING ON THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 12TH

A Board of Adjustment meeting will be held on Thursday, February 12, 2009 at 6:00 p.m. in the Wendell Courtroom to consider two variance requests:

A variance request submitted by Quality Equipment, LLC for property located at 901 Three Sisters Road involving §154.103 as it relates to maximum allowed signage per parcel and §154.109 as it relates to maximum signage height requirements.

A variance request submitted by Gloria D. Crews for property located at 20 Hall Street involving §154.125 as it relates to expansion of nonconforming structures and §154.33 as it relates to setbacks.

ITEM 6. PART-TIME RECREATION DEPARTMENT EMPLOYEE ART MUSSELMAN TO BE HONORED

Art Musselman, a part-time employee in the Town of Wendell Recreation Department, will have his Citadel basketball jersey retired on January 31st. It will be the first time in The Citadel’s 108 years of playing basketball that a jersey will be honored.

A three-time All-Southern Conference and All-State selection, Art played under Coach Norm Sloan and was voted the state’s Outstanding Basketball Player in 1957. He owned the school’s all-time scoring record (1,504 points) for 25 years.

Art served as head basketball coach at Presbyterian College. He also was an assistant coach to Norm Sloan at North Carolina State University, where he was a member of the Wolfpack’s 1974 NCAA Championship team and three Atlantic Coast Conference Championship teams.

It will be the second banner in McAlister Field House unfurled by The Citadel, as former coach Les Robinson was recognized with the first one last February.

ITEM 7. INFORMATIONAL MEETING ABOUT HISTORIC DISTRICT NOMINATION TO BE HELD ON FEBRUARY 5TH

An informational meeting regarding the nomination of a national register historic district for the Wendell Boulevard areas has been scheduled for Thursday, February 5th at 6:00 p.m. in the Wendell Courtroom.  The public information meeting is meant primarily to inform people who own property (within the district boundary) what the register listing means and what it does not mean in regard to their property.
However, it is open to the general public. Notice of the meeting will be sent by mail on the 23rd for those owning property inside the boundary area in addition to a general notice that will be published in the Eastern Wake News.

ITEM 8. OTHER:

In a rescheduled Planning Board meeting on Thursday, January 22nd (due to the snow), the Planning voted to not recommend the Parkside development project by a vote of 4 to 3. Therefore, the Board of Commissioners will have to have a super-majority (4 out of 5) to approve the project.

Getting around downtown Raleigh will be getting easier. Raleigh will begin operating a free downtown circulator bus route on Feb. 14. The three-mile, counterclockwise route takes in Peace Street and state government on the north, Glenwood South on the west, the convention center on the south, and Wilmington Street on the east. The circulator will run from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, and until 2 a.m. Thursday through Saturday nights. Sunday has a reduced schedule, 1 to 8 p.m. For more information, click here.

The Wendell Parks and Recreation Department deadline for Baseball / Softball / T-ball registration is February 5th.
