Board of Commissioners Friday Update
January 2, 2009
Happy New Year!
ITEM 1. NEXT MEETING OF JOINT LEGISLATIVE STUDY COMMISSION ON MUNICIPAL ANNEXATION – THURSDAY, JANUARY 7TH AT 10:00 A.M.
The next meeting of the Joint Senate and House Study Commission on Municipal Annexation will be on January 6, 2009. The agenda for this meeting will include 45 minutes for public comment. The meeting will be at 10:00 am in Room 643 of the Legislative Office Building.
On January 22nd, the commission is expected to be presented with and vote on a proposed recommendation. Currently, there are many, many proposals and some do include a moratorium and/or a referendum process. The legislative staff is expected to work with the co-chairs to develop a final recommendation in the coming weeks for consideration by the Commission. The January 22nd meeting also will be at 10:00 am in Room 643 of the Legislative Office Building.
On a related note, Jerry Jones (Morehead City’s Mayor and President of the NCLM) had an op-ed article about municipalities’ annexation authority and the NCLM’s 20-point proposal for annexation reform.

The League's 20-point proposal (distributed to the board previously) is also available by clicking on the “Legislative Action Center” link at
www.nclm.org.
ITEM 2. EMPLOYEE AWARDS AND RECOGNITION BREAKFAST – WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 7TH AT 7:00 A.M.
The annual Town of Wendell Employee Awards and Recognition Breakfast will be held on Wednesday, January 7th at 7:00 a.m. at the community center. This event is evolving from the annual Employee Safety Award Breakfast, to which commissioners were invited last year. Previously, the awards for this breakfast centered on employee safety and attendance. This year, the “Employee of the Year” award (which in prior years was awarded at the employees’ Christmas luncheon) is being added, along with employee service awards (in increments of 5 years, 10 years, 15 years and 20 years of service). Commissioner Thompson and the manager will prepare the meal.
ITEM 3. OTHER:
An interesting article about the sharp decline in the recyclables market was in the News & Observer on Friday, December 26th.
Click here to read the N&O article which reports that the recyclable materials market, which was booming only a few months ago, has dropped sharply along with the lackluster economy. Reduced demand for used paper, plastic bottles, glass, and metal cans has caused prices to plummet, creating a backlog of materials at processing plants.
Congratulations to Planner Stacy Griffin, who recently completed the Certified Zoning Officer certification.
The Town of Wendell began Christmas tree pick-up on Tuesday, December 30, 2008 and will continue with regular limb pick-up every Tuesday thereafter.
Submissions for the town’s Request for Qualifications (or RFQ) for Economic Development Services are due January 8, 2009. Finalists are scheduled to make presentations to the Board of Commissioners at the January 24th meeting.
The annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Breakfast will be on Monday, January 19th at 8:00 a.m. at Wendell Baptist Church. Tickets are available through ministers of local churches. The manager has a couple of tickets if commissioners need some.
Time Warner Cable meeting with downtown merchants (to discuss the opportunity of hooking onto a fiber optic communications system when the lines to serve the town buildings are installed) will be on WEDNESDAY, January 14th from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Wendell Community Center.
