Board of Commissioners Friday Update

January 9, 2009

ITEM 1. 8 SUBMISSIONS TO ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT RFQ RECEIVED
By the Thursday, January 8th deadline, the town received 8 submissions to its Request for Qualifications for Economic Development Services.

Staff plans to review the submissions and pare the firms down to 3 finalists, who will make presentations at the January 26th board meeting.

ITEM 2. JOINT LEGISLATIVE STUDY COMMISSION ON MUNICIPAL ANNEXATION MEETING
The Joint Senate and House Study Commission on Municipal Annexation met on Tuesday, January 6, 2009. The NCLM is expected to send-out more information about what transpired at this meeting in the next couple of days.

The next meeting will be on January 22nd, when the commission is expected to be presented with and vote on a proposed recommendation. The January 22nd meeting also will be at 10:00 am in Room 643 of the Legislative Office Building.

ITEM 3. NC LEAGUE OF MUNICIPALITIES REGIONIAL LEGISLATIVE UPDATE –
The NC League of Municipalities will hold 10 regional legislative updates around the state during January. The closest meeting to Wendell is a January 21st meeting at the Bill Ellis Restaurant in Wilson. The meeting starts at 4:00 p.m. We are encouraged to invite our legislators to the event. The meeting is free, but registration is required. (Dinner is not provided.) Please let Town Clerk Jonnie Driver know by Wednesday, January 14th if you would like for her to register you for the event.

Mayor Broadwell and Manager Bone plan to attend a regional update at 10:00 a.m. in Pinehurst on January 21st (instead of the Wilson meeting, even though it is a little further away) due to a conflict with the Carolantic Realty annual Commercial Real Estate Conference, which starts at 4:30 p.m. on January 21st. Anyone is welcome to ride with the mayor and manager to that event. If you would like to attend, please contact Town Clerk Jonnie Driver by January 14th.

ITEM 4. SGT. BOBBY LANGSTON HONORED AS EMPLOYEE OF THE YEAR / OTHER AWARDS GIVEN AT EMPLOYEE BREAKFAST
A good time was had by all at the Employee Awards and Recognition Breakfast, which was held on Wednesday, January 7th. Safe Driving and Attendance awards were presented, along with a 5-year service award (Billy Denton) and a 15-year service award (Kenny Goad).

Additionally, Sgt. Bobby Langston was honored as the Employee of the Year for 2008. Bobby also won the award in 1998. Attached is a copy of a press release announcing Bobby’s award.
Congratulations to all of the award winners!

ITEM 5. UDO COMMITTEE TO HOLD SECOND MEETING THIS MONTH
The UDO Committee met on Monday, January 5th. The committee will also meet on Tuesday, January 13th at 6:00 p.m. to continue its work on the draft Unified Development Ordinance.

ITEM 6. REP. LINDA COLEMAN TAPPED BY GOVERNOR-ELECT PURDUE TO BE THE STATE PERSONNEL DIRECTOR
Rep. Linda Coleman has been named the State Personnel Director by Governor-Elect Perdue. Before winning a seat in 2005 and representing eastern Wake County in the legislature, Coleman was a member and served as chairwoman of the Wake County Board of Commissioners. She has extensive experience in personnel management for the state. Click here to read the N&O article.

ITEM 7. POLICE DEPARTMENT MEETS WITH COMMUNITY WATCH GROUP
On Thursday, January 8th, the Wendell Police Department met with the Buffalo Road Community Watch group. This is the only active Community Watch group in Wendell. Neighborhoods interested in participating in the Community Watch program should call Chief Johnson at town hall (365-4444).

ITEM 8. CRIMESTOPPERS REWARD FOR INFORMATION ON RECENT BREAK-INS
Eastern Wake CrimeStoppers is offering a reward for information about the recent break-ins in Wendell churches and businesses. People with information can call 366-CRIME (366-2746).

ITEM 9. INFORMATIONAL MEETING ABOUT HISTORIC DISTRICT NOMINATION TO BE HELD ON FEBRUARY 5TH
An informational meeting regarding the nomination of a national register historic district for the Wendell Boulevard areas has been scheduled for Thursday, February 5th at 6:00 p.m. in the Wendell Courtroom.  The public information meeting is meant primarily to inform people who own property (within   the district boundary) what the register listing means and what it does not mean in regard to their property.  However, it is open to the general public. Notice of the meeting will be sent by mail on the 23rd for those owning property inside the boundary area in addition to a general notice that will be published in the Eastern Wake News.

ITEM 10. DISCUSSIONS WITH AT&T ABOUT BROADCASTING EAST WAKE TV ON THEIR NEW TELEVISION SERVICE
This week, the manager participated in a conference call this week with representatives of AT&T and the managers of Knightdale and Zebulon to discuss East Wake TV’s participation in the AT&T “U-verse” TV channel line-up as part of AT&T’s PEG channel line-up. Discussions and preparations will continue in the coming months. When the service begins, East Wake TV will be a part of a drop-down menu shown under Channel 99. All participating PEG channels in our service area will be available under Channel 99.
No information about which neighborhoods AT&T may serve has been shared.

ITEM 11. PROGRESS ON POTENTIAL TRIANGLE TRANSIT EXPRESS BUS SERVICE IN EASTERN WAKE COUNTY
Town staff has been working with Triangle Transit staff on a draft survey to be used to gauge interest in a possible express bus service from eastern Wake County to Raleigh. The survey should be available in a few weeks. Potential park and ride lot sites in the Wendell area are still under review.

ITEM 12. OTHER:
Time Warner Cable meeting with downtown merchants (to discuss the opportunity of hooking onto a fiber optic communications system when the lines to serve the town buildings are installed) will be on WEDNESDAY, January 14th from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Wendell Community Center.

The annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Breakfast will be on Monday, January 19th at 8:00 a.m. at Wendell Baptist Church. Tickets are available through ministers of local churches. The manager has a couple of tickets if commissioners need some.
