WakeUp Wake County Update

WakeUP UPdate - Sept. 5

It's officially election season. The national elections are in the headlines, but don't forget the local and state elections. The county commissioners and state representatives and senators we elect will have a direct effect on how growth issues are handled in our Triangle community. Want to learn more? Come hear views on the "Elections and Growth" at WakeUP's annual meeting 7-9 pm, Thursday, October 2. The meeting features views from the left and the right as Chris Fitzsimon, NC PolicyWatch, and John Hood, the John Locke Foundation, share their opinions on how local and state elections could affect important growth issues, like schools, water and transit. WakeUP Wake County's annual meeting will be held in Fletcher Auditorium at the Progress Energy Center for the Performing Arts in downtown Raleigh, Oct. 2nd. WakeUP's teams will provide updates on issues, and new board members will be introduced. The public is invited to attend. Admission free, but please consider a donation of $25 to help make this a successful event. Donate here.

Thank you!

Chair, WakeUp Wake County

League of Women Voters Candidates' Forum Sept. 17

Election season is the time to ask candidates how they will deal with growth! Many organizations are holding candidates' forums this fall for candidates running for Wake Board of Commissioners and the NC General Assembly. WakeUP urges you to attend these forums and ask candidates:

* How should we pay for needed schools?
* Do they support expanding public transit to deal with transportation needs of our growing population?
* Who should pay for expanding our water and sewer system for increasing development?
* Do they support growth paying for growth?

Don't miss the Wake League of Women Voters candidates' forum for Wake county commissioners, Wed., Sept. 17, 7 pm, at the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, corner Brooks and Clark Aves., Raleigh.

SIGN TRANSIT PETITION of Capital Area Friends of Transit!

A new community alliance supporting regional transit has formed, called the Capital Area Friends of Transit. YOU can be a friend of transit too! Sign the on-line petition by clicking here. The Capital Area Friends of Transit includes many community organizations (with interests ranging from business, affordable housing, the environment, to persons with disabilties) and civic leaders who recognize that the Triangle will need expanded, effective transit to move our growing population efficiently to work, home and play. Building on the momentum at our public transit forum, WakeUP has brought many organizations together in support of the recommendations of the Special Transit Advisory Committee (STAC). The high price of gas means transportation is only going to get more expensive, and the time is right to move forward. Local elected officials will be considering the STAC recommendations, and the NC General Assembly will take up transit legislation in 2009. So please sign the petition TODAY. Forward this email to a friend and ask them to add their name in support.

Thank you!
