Friday Update

Board of Commissioners Friday Update

September 12, 2008

ITEM 1. MOVIE NIGHT – FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 12TH
The popular “Movie Night” event will take place on Friday, September 12th at the Wendell Park. Activities are scheduled to start around 6:30 p.m., and the movie, “The Bee”, is scheduled to start about 8:30 p.m.

ITEM 2. LAKE MYRA PARK PLANNING MEETING
Planning Director Teresa Piner reports that the Lake Myra Park planning meeting went well on Tuesday. At the meeting, the draft plan for the park was unveiled. Teresa has a copy of the plan on display in the conference room. Also, Wake County taped the meeting, and the videotape of the meeting is expected to be on East Wake TV in the near future. (It is the manager’s understanding that the tape of the meeting is supposed to run at 9:30 p.m. this week.)

ITEM 3. DROUGHT UPDATE
The drought category designation for Wake County was reduced to the “Abnormally Dry” category. To view the NC drought advisory map, visit http://www.ncdrought.org/.
For additional information about the drought relief, review a News & Observer article at http://www.newsobserver.com/weather/stories/story/1216036.html.

ITEM 4. FALLS LAKE UPDATE
Excerpts from a September 9th email from Raleigh Public Utilities Director Dale Crisp are as follows:
The lake level as of 8 A.M. Tuesday was 256.96 feet MSL, which is approximately 5.5 feet ABOVE the lake level when the water supply pool is 100% full (251.5 feet MSL). The lake level dipped to 249.75 feet MSL on August 26th, but the rainfall over the past two weeks from the remnants of TS Fay and TS Hanna has raised the lake level significantly to its current flood storage stage. As you recall, the lake reached a new all-time record low level of 241.52 feet MSL on Christmas Day in 2007 as a result of the exceptional drought. The lake level today is currently 11 feet ABOVE the level on this same date in 2007.
The water supply days projection using the current 30 day pumpage average indicates the City has 278 days of water supply pool currently in storage at Falls Lake (assumes worst case scenario of no rain during this period).
TS Hanna was a significant rain event of 5.2 inches measured at RDU Airport, resulting in the largest rainfall surplus at this National Weather Service (NWS) recording station in over 2 years – approximately 7.4 inches above normal rainfall in 2008. This same rain gauge ended 2007 with a deficit of 7.2 inches of below normal rainfall; therefore, the rainfall deficit from the exceptional drought conditions has now been totally erased by TS Hanna.

ITEM 5. RENOVATION OF FRONT COUNTER IN TOWN HALL TO BEGIN SEPTEMBER 22ND
The renovation of the front counter in the Administration Department (which will create more room to help accommodate Christy’s work space and which will improve safety at the counter) is set to begin on Monday, September 22nd. Curtis Dean is doing the work and expects to be finished in three days.

ITEM 6. MEETING WITH WAKE COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD
On Tuesday, September 30, 2008, the Wake County Board of Education will meet with Elected Officials from the Town of Wendell from 5:30-8:00 p.m. The meeting location will be determined at a later time; however, refreshments will be provided. The tentative schedule for the meeting includes and update on the 2006 Capital Improvement Plan, the Multi-Year Student Assignment Plan Process, and School Board and Municipal Partnerships- Buildings and Renovations (discussion).

ITEM 7. WENDELL FALLS TEMPORARY WELCOME CENTER TO OPEN SEPTEMBER 30TH
Wendell Falls will open a temporary welcome center on October 1. This welcome center will serve as the headquarters until the permanent welcome center opens near the interchange this spring. The temporary welcome center is at the corner of Poole Road and Martin Pond road on the east side of Wendell Falls.
Additional information about Wendell Falls is available online at http://wendellfalls.com/blog/.

C. A public notice is being sent-out requesting bids for the six Police Department vehicles that are included in the 2008-09 Budget. The notice is scheduled to be in the East Wake News next week.
D. Public Works Director Alton Bryant will start work on Monday, September 22nd.
E. Beginning September 15th, a portion of Knightdale-Eagle Rock Road on the Knightdale side of the bypass will be closed for a period not to exceed 150 days.
