Board of Commissioners Friday Update
September 5, 2008
ITEM 1. TROPICAL STORM HANNA
The Town of Wendell staff has prepared well for the severe weather that could come with Tropical Storm Hanna. Employees are on standby, just in case they need to be called in to work over the weekend. Hopefully, there will not be any damage from the storm, and it will just be a good rain event. The town staff will be in communication over the weekend and will respond appropriately on an as-needed basis.
ITEM 2. LAKE MYRA PARK MEETING
The next meeting about the Lake Myra Park planning process will be on Tuesday, September 9th at 7:00 p.m. at the community center. Town staff has asked the county staff if they could tape the meeting for broadcast on EWTV (we are waiting to hear back about this possibility).
ITEM 3. DROUGHT UPDATE
Wake County remains in the “Moderate Drought” category. To view the NC drought advisory map, visit http://www.ncdrought.org/.
ITEM 4. FALLS LAKE UPDATE
Excerpts from a September 2nd email from Raleigh Public Utilities Director Dale Crisp are as follows:
The lake level at Falls Lake as of 8 A.M. Tuesday was 251.2 feet MSL, which is only 0.3 feet (approximately 4 inches) below the lake level when the water supply pool is 100% full. The lake level dipped to 249.75 feet MSL on August 26th, but the rainfall last week has raised the lake level by 1.5 feet to its current level. As you recall, the lake reached a new all-time record low level of 241.52 feet MSL on Christmas Day in 2007 as a result of the exceptional drought. The lake level today is currently 4.8 feet above the level on this same date in 2007. The water supply days projection using the current 30 day pumpage average indicates the City has 266 days of water supply pool currently in storage at Falls Lake (assumes worst case scenario of no rain during this period).
The Raleigh City Council approved a revision to Stage 1 Water Use Restriction Ordinance, effective on Wednesday, May 21, 2008. The Revised Stage 1 ordinance permits two days per week of lawn and landscape irrigation. Since implementing the Revised Stage 1 water use restrictions 104 days ago on May 21st the EMJWTP pumpage average has been 52.8 MGD, which is an 11.6 MGD or 28% increase when compared to the pumpage average during the Stage 1 restriction period.
ITEM 5. MOVIE NIGHT – FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 12TH
The popular “Movie Night” event will take place on Friday, September 12th on the Doug Proctor Field at the Wendell Park. The movie, “The Bee”, will start when it gets dark. There will be other activities on an adjacent field.
