Friday Update

Board of Commissioners Friday Update

August 15, 2008

ITEM 1. PUBLIC WORKS DIRECTOR SEARCH

Public Works Director interviews were conducted this week. There is nothing else to report at this time about the selection of a Public Works Director.

ITEM 2. DROUGHT UPDATE

According to an August 14th News & Observer article, “Drought conditions persist particularly in parched western North Carolina, but more local governments are conserving water than a year ago…. Of the 660 public water systems in the state, 54 percent had water restrictions in place as of July… A year ago, only 12 percent of the systems had conservation measures in place”.

Moderate drought conditions prevail in the Triangle.

Falls Lake, which supplies water for most of Raleigh and Wake County, was about 2.5 feet higher than a year ago, and 90 percent of its water supply remains.

You can read the entire News & Observer article here.

ITEM 3. ELECTED OFFICIALS INVITED TO PLANNING BOARD AND BOARD OF ADJUSTMENT TRAINING

Please remember that elected officials are invited to attend some upcoming Board of Adjustment and Planning Board training events. Elected officials are asked to let staff know in advance if they wish to participate. Zachry Nichols of the NC Department of Commerce will be hosting these training sessions, which will be held on the following dates:

As you are aware from last week’s Friday Memo, the NC Department of Transportation is planning to make changes to the NC 97 / US 64 Business interchange and is asking the town board for a resolution of support for this project.

A digital copy of the plans was received this week, but it is too large to be distributed via email. A copy of the plans will be included in the August 25th agenda packet, along with a resolution of support for the board’s consideration.

The project is expected to cost about $685,000.

ITEM 5. FOLLOW-UP ON CABLE SERVICE TO THE COMMUNITY CENTER

As a follow-up to the July 28th Board of Commissioners meeting (at which time the extension of cable service to the Wendell Community Center was discussed), Recreation Director Brinkley Wagstaff met with representatives of Time Warner Cable on Monday, August 11th concerning the town’s desire for a service line to the community center. Time Warner Cable staff plans to bring a revised proposal for the line installation back to the town in the near future.

As you are aware, the town is currently selling surplus items on the GovDeals web site.
