Comments:
Wake Education Partnership needs to readress their own priorities. The Wake County School System's policy of "balancing the number of low-income students" is antiquated and ineffective. If they were making a difference for the better in the education of children, we would not be having this discussion. Forty years ago, bussing children to better schools was necessary. Today, the schools are better and have better funding. The key to education of children is to address the needs of the whole child, not the policies and standards of politicians. Education is a family affair. The community of the school involves the neighbors, parents, relatives and town support personnel such as police officers and fire fighters. Families need to be able to use the schools for after-school programs; they need to be able to visit the school during the day; the children need to have their parents involved in PTA and school functions. The more involved parents are in the school, the better the test results are. Low-income parents especially need to be able to use the school for furthering their own education and participating with their children in activities. Sending those children to schools 25 to 45 miles from home robs that family of the opportunity of education. Filling the chairs of children who live near to the school with those who live far away, robs everyone of the purpose of education. Every child is entitled to a free and appropriate education. It is not appropriate to teach children that their families and home community are secondary to the policies of politicians trying to live down to the standards of 40 years ago.
