Dear Friends,
Today the State released it's estimate for the Falls Lake Cleanup effort: $1.5 billion. Sediment and chemical fertilizers caused by poor development practices in the watershed continue to compromise the quality of Wake County's main drinking water supply. Learn more by reading Sarah Ovaska's recent article in the N&O. Though the cleanup effort may seem costly, long-term water treatment costs for Wake municipalities could be significantly higher. Plans for a shared public/private effort to fund the cleanup process are currently underway.
How can we protect our drinking water from pollution in the future? The State Division of Water Quality is currently writing stricter rules that could limit future development in the watershed and require existing development to conform to a more rigorous hydrological standard. Learn more about the state of Falls and what can be done to protect it.
The rules process needs your input! Please attend a Falls Lake Public Hearing and learn more about why Falls is in danger and how you can ensure that the rules process is successful - your drinking water and tax dollars are on the line.
**The official 60 day public comment period will begin on June 15, 2010 and end August 16, 2010.
