Board of Commissioners Friday Update

ITEM 1. FARMERS’ MARKET TO OPEN TODAY – SATURDAY, MAY 9^TH

The Wendell Farmers’ Market will open TODAY – Saturday, May 9^th. Please support this new initiative and spread the word about it.

ITEM 2. BLUE RIBBON COMMITTEE MEETING HELD TODAY – FRIDAY, MAY 8^TH

The mayor attended the quarterly meeting of the Blue Ribbon Committee on the Future of Wake County on Friday. At the meeting, there was:

· A Progress Report Update on Blue Ribbon Recommendations;

· Discussion about the Federal Stimulus Package: the NC & Wake County Outlook;

· An overview of the Reality Check exercise, which Mayor Broadwell participated in recently; and

· A panel discussion about transportation issues.

ITEM 3. TOWN HALL DAY HELD ON WEDNESDAY

The NC League of Municipalities’ Town Hall Day was held on Wednesday, May 6^th. Mayor Broadwell, Commissioner Connolly and Manager Bone attended. The legislative update was very informative, as always. We then were able to have a good conversation with Rep. Jackson, along with a delegation from the Town of Garner.

The manager will have some information from the Town Hall Day event to pass-out at Monday’s meeting.

ITEM 4. JOINT MEETING WITH THE GREATER RALEIGH CONVENTION AND VISITORS BUREAU / CHAMBER BOARD – WEDNESDAY, MAY 20^TH AT 3:30 P.M.

You should have received a letter in the mail this week from the Greater Raleigh Convention and Visitors Bureau (GRCVB). The GRCVB has requested a joint meeting with the Wendell Board of Commissioners and the Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors. The meeting is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 20^th at 3:30 p.m. The purpose of the meeting will be to exchange information and should last about 1 hour or so. The GRCVB is asking for an update us on what has been happening in Wendell and what is going to be happening in the next 2-3 years. The GRCVB staff will then update us on what is happening in the visitor industry in Wake County and Wendell. Denny Edwards our (President and CEO of the GRCVB) is scheduled to be present.

ITEM 5. HOLLAND CONSULTING UPDATE IS IN THE AGENDA PACKET UNDER “READING MATERIAL”

Please make note of the monthly update from Holland Consulting Planners (HCP) concerning work on economic development and plans for the upcoming month. HCP will continue to provide these updates, so look for them in future agenda packets.

ITEM 6. MAY 3^RD CONCERT RESCHEDULED TO MAY 17^TH

Because of concern about the weather forecast involving thunderstorms, a decision was made on Saturday, May 2^nd to reschedule the May 3^rd concert to the rain date of May 17^th. This request was made by the band. The Dave Youngman Band will play Jazz, Blues and Swing on Sunday, May 17, 2009 from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m.

ITEM 7. OTHER

A. Wendell town facilities will be closed on Monday, May 25^th for Memorial Day. The Board of Commissioners meeting regularly-scheduled for Monday, May 25^th instead will be held on Tuesday, May 26^th at 7:00 p.m.
