Friday Update

Board of Commissioners Friday Update

April 8, 2009

ITEM 1. EARLY FRIDAY MEMO

The Friday Memo is being distributed early this week. The town offices will be closed on Friday, April 10th for the Good Friday holiday. Additionally, the manager is taking Thursday, April 9th as a vacation day. With the short work week, there is not as much to report.

ITEM 2. BUDGET WORK SESSION – TUESDAY, APRIL 14TH AT 1:00 P.M.

The Board of Commissioners is reminded that it will hold a budget work session on Tuesday, April 14th at 1:00 p.m. in the Wendell Courtroom. A draft budget will be discussed.

ITEM 3. POLICE GRANT APPLICATION UPDATE

The Town of Wendell’s pre-application to the Governor’s Crime Commission Grant Program (which was approved by the Board of Commissioners on January 12, 2009) has been approved. The Police Department is now working on a full application. It is expected that the Board of Commissioners will be asked to vote on a resolution of support for the town’s application at its April 27th meeting.

Wendell’s request for in its pre-application to the Governor’s Crime Commission involved funding for a Gang Officer. Grants are awarded for one year, with 75% of funds coming from the grant, and the remaining 25% being funded locally. It is estimated that the 25% match would cost the town $18,500. Participation in the grant program for a second year at the same rate could be requested but is not guaranteed. Funding would include the officer’s salary and all benefits, as well as equipment and training.

If the town’s application is approved and funded, a gang officer would be selected from existing officers, and a new hire would fill that vacancy. Selection would be based upon work history and knowledge of the gang problems in our area. After the initial 75% match, it is expected that the town will continue to fund the position added through the grant.

The final grant approval process varies, depending upon availability of federal funds. The expected time frame for approval is July 2009 to October 2009.
